Discover the Wines of Spain

Spain is one of the world’s most diverse wine regions, offering an incredible range of styles shaped by its varied landscapes, climates, and soils. From the sun-soaked plains of La Mancha to the cool, slate-strewn hills of Bierzo and the rugged mountains of Sierra de Gredos, Spain’s vineyards are as distinctive as the wines they produce.

Key Grapes to Know

  • Tempranillo: Spain’s signature red, known for red fruit, earthy notes, and age-worthy structure. Found in Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and other regions.
  • Garnacha (Grenache): Vibrant and juicy, often grown at high altitudes in Madrid and Aragón, with red berry, spice, and herbal nuances.
  • Mencía: Native to Bierzo, producing medium-bodied reds with floral aromatics, bright acidity, and mineral-driven complexity.
  • Other Reds: Monastrell, Bobal, Cariñena, and regional field blends showcase Spain’s rich varietal diversity.
  • Whites: Albariño (coastal and aromatic), Verdejo (fresh and zesty), and Godello (elegant and mineral) are just a few examples of Spain’s vibrant white wines.

What Makes Spanish Wines Special

Spanish winemakers often prioritize terroir-driven expression and minimal intervention. Traditional methods (like fermenting with native yeasts, aging in clay amphorae or concrete eggs, and careful oak maturation) coexist with modern approaches, producing wines that are both approachable and deeply expressive. Unique soils, diverse climates, and high-altitude vineyards contribute to wines that range from fresh and aromatic to bold, structured, and age-worthy.

Whether it’s a mineral-driven Mencía from Bierzo, a high-altitude Garnacha from Madrid, or a nuanced Tempranillo from Rioja, Spanish wines invite exploration and offer endless discovery for the curious palate.
