CAMPBELL RIVER: Bob Bray, proponent of the province-wide petition titled "Initiative to Allow the Voluntary Formation of Twenty Charter Schools", announces the end of the legislative petition process.
Legislative Petition ends today-November 18
Using BC's unique Initiative Petition legislation is a strategy that was decided by the Social Mavrik Federation on April 28 with the completion of the document describing the purposes of this new society.

Adding a few public charter schools to our school system is seen as a way to bring competition to the sector. The dynamics of competition will strengthen the public education system spontaneously and over the long term.

Public independent schools would also add education stability for students whose studies are occasionally disrupted by the structural instability of public government schools.

Then on May 8th a draft of legislation about public charter schools was submitted to Elections BC. The internal review conducted by Elections BC called for some revisions and an approved version of the draft legislation emerged on June 20.

The 5-month petition clock began ticking then. The first two months, from June 20 to August 19, allowed for the recruiting of canvassers.

During the next three months, from August 19 to November 18, canvasser recruitment continued and canvassing for signatures on petition sheets was conducted.
The Results
Our first taste of Direct Democracy
Eight voters came forward on their own initiative and applied to be a canvasser. Upon my approval as the proponent they were successfully registered by Elections BC.

The registered canvassers came from five provincial electoral districts.

The Elections BC list of 8 registered canvassers will be up-to-date by the end of the day on November 18 and can be seen here.

Eight signatures were collected on Elections BC petition sheets and original copies were delivered to the Victoria office of Elections BC on November 18.

Weekly announcements were emailed during September, October and November to a distribution list that now totals 202 recipients.
