Pets Matter, a publication of the American Animal Hospital Association recently interviewed several participating Pets of the Homeless veterinarians who give back to their local communities. Veterinarians who wish to help those less fortunate apply for Grants with Pets of the Homeless. Once approved and selected, Pets of the Homeless then provides Grants and sponsors Wellness Clinics in areas most needed.
Veterinarians then hold a Wellness Clinic and donate their time, including their staff and vaccinate, deworm and adminster flea medications as needed to dogs and cats who's guardian is homeless.
"We would not be able to do this without the help of veterinarians," said Renee Lowry, the organization's executive director.
The next Wellness Clinic will be held at the Reno Project Homeless Connect on January 31, 2017.
Pets of the Homeless received a call from a homeless woman who lives in her car in Southern CA about her dog Fionna, a 7 year old female Imperial Shitzu. Fionna cries when she's urinating, won't eat, and won't come out of her carrier. Fionna was diagnosed with bladder stones back in June, but her guardian hasn't been able to afford surgery to remove the stones. Pets of the Homeless approved an examination.
The veterinarian recommended and Pets of the Homeless provided financial assistance with an x-ray, pain injection, and surgery to remove the stones. This included bloodwork, iv catheter, sedation, anesthesia, cystotomy, an e-collar, special food to go home, as well as antibiotics. She had multiple stones, 1 large, and 10 smaller stones removed.
Fionna's guardian said she was so thankful for Pets of the Homeless assistance and she is doing so much better. Fionna is like a new dog again.
