Our 2020 Impact Report is Here

Look out! Summer is on its way, and with it comes the summer heat. While spending time out in the sun can be a fun way to pass the time, it’s important to keep your pet’s safety in mind. Here are a few tips to make the best of this summer with your furry companion:
Keep fresh water on hand
We all know the happy relief water provides for us on a hot day, so when you pack water for yourself, don’t forget to grab some for your pet! Animals get dehydrated easily, so it’s important to have fresh, clean water on hand or nearby.
Watch for symptoms of heatstroke
A pet that is overheating can show excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor, or even collapse. Symptoms can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea, and vomit, along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees. If your pet is showing these symptoms, treat them for heatstroke right away by moving them to the shade or an air-conditioned area and then get them to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
Remember, some animals are more susceptible to heatstroke, including animals with flat faces— since they can’t pant as effectively, elderly animals, overweight animals, and those with heart or lung issues. If your animal has one of these conditions, they should be kept in cool, indoor rooms as much as possible during hot weather.
Never leave your animals alone in a parked car
It is not safe for pets to be left in a parked car when it is hot out. Studies have shown that even when parked in the shade, even with a sunscreen, and even with windows cracked, the temperature in a car on a hot day goes from hot to deadly in just a few minutes. Even if you are just running into a store, your pet is at risk of heatstroke and death from a hot car.

Adorable Adoptable
Meet Penelope!
|
Meet Penelope! This 10-month-old Shepherd/Hound mix is always ready to join you on all of life’s fabulous adventures. Penelope is an outgoing girl who loves zooming around the yard, chasing after squeaky toys and tennis balls. But most of all, she adores WATER! She absolutely loves to wade around in streams, ponds, or lakes you might encounter while out on walks and hikes. Not the picky sort, Penelope will settle for splashing around in a kiddie pool of her very own, if she can't make it to the lake. This talented girl is already potty trained, crate trained, and is currently working on "leave it" with great success. She would love to find an active family who can continue to work on teaching her fun new tricks. If this smart, fun-loving girl sounds like the perfect canine companion for you, visit our website to learn more about her. Submit adoption applications to adoptions@kitsap-humane.org!

Volunteer Spotlight
Meet George Luzik!
|
8 years, 2 months of volunteering, 5,392 hours of service, 3,478 facilitated adoptions, and countless lives changed for the better. George Luzik is a truly remarkable individual. His dedication to the mission and animals within KHS is deeply felt by all who have come to know him.
While George has dabbled in nearly every volunteer opportunity during his time with us, he is most passionate and committed to our feline population. In addition to being one of our feline leads and mentoring fresh volunteers in all things cat, he has become a mainstay in adoption counseling for the past several years.
In chatting with George, he reflected on his time fondly, sharing, "My time at KHS has been rewarding in many ways. I get as excited with each adoption as I did on my first. There is no greater joy than seeing how filled with love and excitement adopters are when matched with the purr-fect cat or kitten."
Through the pandemic, we have been overjoyed to witness so many of our community members opening their hearts and homes by providing forever homes to the animals in our care.
|
|
Even volunteers like George welcomed a new furry companion, named Jamie, to his family last year. "We got him as a kitten one year ago, and he has been such a joy to us. He helped us so much getting through the early days of the pandemic ."
Thank you, George, for your generosity of spirit! We wouldn't be able to do this lifesaving work without volunteers like you!

Staff Spotlight
Meet Laura Shaw!
|
Serving the shelter as our Development Associate, Laura has been a part of our staff team since last November and she’s already getting two paws up from her teammates!
As Development Associate, Laura works one-on-one with many of our donors as well as manages our vehicle donation program.
“I love working in this role as it allows me to develop meaningful relationships with our donors and feel their passion and excitement for helping animals. My favorite part is seeing animals go to their forever homes— it’s the reason we do what we do!”
Laura’s manager shared, “Laura is our “behind the scenes” rockstar! She’s an extremely passionate person when it comes to animal welfare and meaningful donor relationships. Laura has a keen knack for attention to detail, and constantly goes above and beyond to help wherever she can!"
|
|
Laura recently adopted a bunny from KHS, and prior to that, she adopted a “senior, loving cuddle bug of a cat” named Muttley from KHS, with whom she had “an extra eight wonderful years” with!
It sounds like you’ve found your “purr-fect” fit with our team, Laura! We couldn’t be more happy. Thank you!
