"Probably Not A Stewardship Sermon... "

(Click on Scripture Passage)
What a greeting. Just back from vacation and the excitement of becoming a grandfather, and our Gospel text is one often considered by pastors, scholars and lay people as the most difficult parable Jesus ever told. Confusion sets in from the beginning as many Bibles provide a heading for the passage but cannot agree on what to call it. Consider these to name a few:
  • Parable of the Unjust Steward
  • Parable of the Penitent Steward
  • Parable of the Shrewd Manager
  • Parable of the Dishonest Manager
  • The Shrewd But Dishonest Manager
Is he unjust? Is he sorry? Is he shrewd? Is he dishonest? Is he shrewd and dishonest?

So what to do? First, let's not run from it but tackle it head on. Second, let's not lapse into a cliche stewardship sermon, though the topic of money and wealth is unavoidable. Third, let's do consider the Amos passage along with Luke's parable and the context in which the story takes place.

Join us for worship on Sunday at 10:30 AM as we grapple together with words of Jesus that are difficult for modern ears to hear.

Blessings and peace,
Danny

Introducing Francis, Jacquline and Julia Purdy

At 9:34 and 9:35 AM on Friday September 13th, Scottie and Danny Trapp -a bit unexpectedly-became grandparents. Their daughter Simmons is doing great and was able to go home on Monday. The babies, who ranged in weight between 3.2 and 3.8 lbs at birth, are all doing well and are in the NICU at Prism Health in Columbia SC. Many thanks for all of the prayers and good wishes and keep Francis, Jacquie and Julia in your prayers as they gain strength and stamina in the NICU for the next several weeks.
Pastor’s Bible Study – Looking Toward Sunday

Join me downstairs in the Choir Room on Tuesdays at 12:30 pm for a study of the Scripture texts for the following Sunday. This Tuesday, September 24th, we will discuss Amos 6:1-7 and Luke 16:19-31. Feel free to bring lunch or just come as you are for an hour of fellowship and study. – Danny
