Submit your "Ask a Senior Professional" questions

You asked, and we got you answers!

We received many excellent questions about careers from last month's "Ask a Senior Professional" survey. Since many students expressed interest in general medicine clinical pharmacy, we got in touch with Dr. Alan Tan, a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist with a clinical focus on general medicine and anticoagulation. Thank you for volunteering your time and expertise Dr. Tan! We appreciate your input!

Check out our Youtube playlist where Dr. Tan discusses his precepting philosophy, compassionate mentorship, clinical challenges in general medicine, and his professional journey:

California Assembly Bill 1286 Update - Stop Dangerous Pharmacies Act

In 2021, the California Board of Pharmacy launched a survey to address patient safety concerns caused by insufficient pharmacy staffing and high workloads. The results showed that an overwhelming majority of pharmacists did not have the staffing resources to provide adequate patient care. As a result, Assemblyman Matt Haney (pictured on the right) sponsored the Stop Dangerous Pharmacies Act (AB1286).

AB1286 - Key Takeaways:

  • Expands the role of the pharmacist-in-charge, authorizing them to make "staffing decisions and to prevent fatigue, distraction, or other conditions that may interfere with patient care." Chain pharmacies must now be fully staffed with at least one clerk or technician that perform pharmacy-related services. Acting pharmacists must also report safety concerns that pose a risk to patients or staff to store management and immediate action must be taken to address safety issues. Failure to comply will result in a cease-and-desist order for unprofessional conduct or pharmacy corporation.

  • Expands the role of pharmacy technicians, authorizing them to take additional responsibilities under pharmacist supervision. Technicians can prepare and administer COVID-19 and influenza vaccines, prepare and administer epinephrine, and perform specimen collection for some tests.

  • Strengthens medication error reporting requirements, mandating community pharmacies to report medication error to an entity approved by the board of pharmacy within 14 days. Reports are confidential and not subject to disclosure under the California Public Records Act.

Ever Heard of Nuclear Pharmacy?

Nuclear pharmacy. 2024. University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Nuclear pharmacy involves the preparation of radioactive materials to diagnose and treat specific disease states. In the United States, individuals must complete additional training in radiation safety, including the compounding, preparation, and delivery of radioactive materials, to become practicing nuclear pharmacists. Nuclear pharmacists work in institutional or commercial settings such as large medical centers and radiopharmaceutical facilities. Their key functions include compounding and dispensing medication, assessing the quality of radioisotope preparations, handling hazardous chemicals and specimens, and testing novel radio-pharmaceuticals.

In terms of job characteristics, nuclear pharmacists work an average of 46 hours per week and earn between $100,000 to $120,000. Although the work schedule is demanding, many pharmacists appreciate the collaboration with other providers, the lack of patient insurance and billing issues, and the challenging nature of the role.
