Pheasants Forever Education and Outreach Award

By Charlie Burchfield For the Tri-County Weekend

The North Central Pennsylvania Pheasants Forever Chapter 630 embodies true volunteerism. Over the course of the year, North Central PA volunteers spent 61 calendar days attending, hosting and participating in various outreach events.

This past year, the chapter hosted a “Women On The Wing” weekend along with three youth learn-to-hunt pheasant hunts, that engaged over 130 new hunters. Additionally, the chapter conducted a veteran’s hunt that hosted over 300 participants. This hunt has gained the distinction of being the largest veteran’s pheasant hunt in the nation.

Additionally, the chapter held two hunts for terminally ill youngsters, along with their families, providing them with pheasant hunting, trap/skeet shooting, UTV riding, fishing and horseback riding opportunities.

The group also organized a 5K run/walk and took part in three work days on state game lands.

Chapter members reached out to a number of schools providing “Milkweed in the Classroom” kits and engaged with students on the importance of pollinators.

In the field, the chapter members took part in five youth field day events in four counties featuring field dog handling and discussing upland wildlife habitat conservation.

And of special note, the chapter hosted a special three-day weekend event for two terminally ill youngsters and their families.

Pheasants Forever National Awards

Pheasants Forever volunteer chapters throughout America gathered at the Kansas City Convention Center hosted by the National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic that was held on March 1-2.

As part of the event, Pheasants Forever honored chapters for their mission-driven accomplishments over the past year.

The award categories included habitat work, membership, education and outreach, and conservation advocacy.

Prior to the presentation of the awards it was noted, “These attributes are what propel the organization’s conservation accomplishments from year-to-year.”

The North Central Pennsylvania Pheasants Forever Chapter 630 was honored with the Education and Outreach Award.

Denny Tritt

1954-2023

In 1977 Denny, Mark McDevitt, Jim Aubel and Tom Sommers purchased a hunting camp in Duhring, Forest County. Denny was an avid grouse hunter until around 2010 when the grouse population severely declined due to West Nile Virus. Denny retired in 2010, and his 5th yellow Lab sadly passed away before hunting season started. About that time Denny and his friends found State Game Lands 44 in Elk County. That fall Denny started hunting there alone without a dog. Many times, other hunters would see Denny and invite him along to hunt with them and their dog. Many were PF Chapter 630 members. Denny greatly appreciated that kindness and vowed to get another dog. The following year Denny got Ellie, his next yellow Lab. Denny spent the entire early pheasant season every year hunting pheasants rain or shine with Ellie, spending most of his time at SGL 44. Denny greatly appreciated the habitat work Chapter 630 has done on SGL 44 and was proud of being part of Chapter 630.

Denny was diagnosed with cancer in February 2023 and sadly passed away in July. Prior to his passing Denny asked that his family donate his prized Massey Ferguson tractor to Pheasants Forever Chapter 630. His wife Joyce, and sons Mike and Matt eagerly agreed to his request. We’d like to think Denny is smiling down from that big hunting ground in the sky tonight knowing he helped further Pheasants Forever ‘s habitat projects.

He is truly missed.

Pheasants Forever's first permanent protection project in the state.

Kurt Bond the mid-Atlantic Field Service Representative, Pheasants Forever, Inc. and Quail Forever shared the following news with our Chapter

A 119-acre addition has been made to state game lands #229 in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. This marks Pheasants Forever's first permanent protection project in the state. After discussing public land acquisition support with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, they collaborated to quickly acquire this property when it became available. The site, a reclaimed mine, is within a short drive of New York City, Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Allentown, and Reading, enhancing access to upland bird opportunities in the region.
