Celebrating all things phenology!

Hi USA-NPN,

Thank you for joining us for Phenology Week!

Some of you may be familiar with the USA-NPN's Botany Primer: Understanding botany for Nature's Notebook. We are working hard to finally complete the Botany Primer's sister guide: the Phenophase Primer for Flowering Plants. Section 1 was released in 2017 as a draft version and Section 2 is nearing completion. For Phenology Week we are providing this preview of Section 2, which is organized by plant functional group and follows the progression of phenophases over an annual cycle in a few representative species. This excerpt includes the Deciduous Tree/Shrub functional group and its four species selected for inclusion. Look for our release of the completed Primer in a few weeks!

If you're just tuning in, every day this week we will let you know about our upcoming talks, a daily #PhenologyWeek challenge, and highlights from some of our top observers! If you would like to share your experiences with us, we would love for you to send an email, or tag us on social media! Access our media kit here.

Thank you so much for your continued efforts and support! We truly could not have accomplished so much in these past 16 years without you.

Gratefully,

Thursday's #PhenologyWeek challenge

Throwback Thursday!

Today we are going to combine #ThrowbackThursday with your #PhenologyPhriend – does your phenology phriend hold special memories for you? Maybe it has historical or cultural significance to you, your family, and your community. If not, what is another plant that has meaning for you? Post a picture of your plant and tell us your story with the #PhenologyWeek hashtag, and @usa_npn will share your stories at the end of the week!

If you would like to track the seasonal changes of your plant with #NaturesNotebook, create an account at naturesnotebook.org, add your site and plant, and learn how to collect phenology data that researchers can use to study seasonal patterns of plants and animals.

More to come this week!
