With spring's arrival, we can finally say goodbye to a long winter. Just as flowers will soon be blooming and bees will be humming, the same thing can be said of Philander Smith College. As construction of our new campus center continues, our  campus is visited by prospective students and their families, and as graduating students look to move their careers forward, the atmosphere abounds with excitement and energy.

Yes, Philander Smith College is MOVING FORWARD! We have a new Interim President. We have accomplished students being recognized for their talents. A new building is going up.  Through our upcoming golf tournament, we will once again honor one of our Hall of Fame great alums. And soon, we will celebrate with our dedicated and faithful alumni who will be coming home.

Dr. Lloyd Hervey Named Interim President

Dr. Lloyd E. Hervey, Ed.D. '68 was recently named interim President at Philander Smith College.  He is a 1968 graduate of Philander Smith College.  He received his Master of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Central Arkansas in 1971 and his Doctorate of Education from the University of Memphis in 1995.  His education philosophy is "a teacher is a trichotomy: a facilitator, the teacher functions as, a guide on the side and not the sage on the stage."  In this role, the teacher creates opportunities for learning in and through which students use their schema to discover and construct meaning.  The environment in which this type of learning flourishes is one where the teacher functions as a nurturer and ensues caring relationships with students and fosters their growth in needed areas.

With Dr. Hervey's leadership, we are MOVING FORWARD.

and
Philander Smith College Women's Basketball Coach
and
All Conference Players

For the second consecutive year, the PSC Panthers Men's Basketball Team was included in the NAIA National Championship Tournament in Kansas City.

Coach Brandon Greenwood, head women's basketball coach at Philander Smith College, was named the 2014 GCAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year!

Greenwood, a former player and graduate of Philander Smith and the grandson of Coach Johnny Greenwood (former Athletic Director and Head Men's Basketball Coach who served from 1992-2003), has worked hard to elevate the Lady Panther ball club to higher heights. Since 2009, Greenwood has served as head coach of the Lady Panther basketball team.

The following is an excerpt from the GCAC press release of the 2014 All-Conference Team:

"Greenwood won Coach of the Year honors for leading the Philander Smith College Lady Panthers to a 17-13 overall record and an 8-4 conference mark, good enough for third in the Western Division. The team was picked to finish fifth in the conference in the preseason GCAC coaches poll. Since joining the conference for the 2011-12 season, it has been a steady climb for the Lady Panthers as Greenwood has led the team from 7-23, to 15-16 last season, to 17-13 this year."

The GCAC announced the 2014 All-Conference Team. Once again, Philander Smith College was recognized as three players received the all-conference honor: Jerricka Scott (women's basketball) and D'Alvin Brown and Juvon Demerson (men's basketball).
