child_with_umbrella_chalk.jpg

The bipartisan, bicameral Family First Prevention Services Act of 2016 (H.R. 5456, S. 3065) was introduced in the House of Representatives on June 13 and in the Senate on June 16. Many partnered across the sectors of philanthropy, advocacy, government, provider and constituents to push for this reform. This legislation allows for federal child welfare dollars to be used on prevention investments and encourages the placement of children in foster care in the least restrictive, most family-like settings appropriate to their special needs. It represents an historic step forward for vulnerable children and families. The bill passed the House on June 21 and awaits a vote in the Senate.
Philanthropy and Immigration
Houston Endowment and The Simmons Foundation release joint statement
Note with words Immigration Law and glasses.

On June 23, the U.S. Supreme Court split 4-4 on Texas v. United States, upholding the existing injunction delaying any implementation of expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA). The decision leaves immigrants in limbo. Houston Endowment and The Simmons Foundation have released a joint statement highlighting that this is a critical opportunity for philanthropy to reaffirm the value and contribution of immigrants -- and to support organizations that provide vital services to children and families in need.
