Video of March Program Activities

Hello Friends,

Welcome to the April Newsletter. As you may know, April is Parkinson's Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, inspire, and celebrate people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers. As we spring into April, we look forward to a wide variety of programs that move, inspire and educate in the spirit of Parkinson’s Awareness Month.

This month’s featured event is the Parkinson's Foundation's Moving Day Tampa Bay. Moving Day celebrates movement and supports the Parkinson's Foundation’s mission to make life better for people living with Parkinson’s. We are excited to be participating in the event again this year with our team called ‘JCC PD Pals’. We'd love to have you on our team just click here.

Speaking of Moving Day, this month’s Lunch & Learn will feature Kelly Sivyer, Parkinson’s Foundation Senior Director of Development, Southeast Region and coordinator of Moving Day Tampa Bay. Kelly will share information about the Foundation’s resources for improving care, advancing research towards a cure, Moving Day, and more.

Something new this month is our Community Drum Circle led by a professional facilitator. Drum Circle is a fun and creative way to express yourself, connect with others, and experience the therapeutic benefits of rhythm. Drumming can help improve mood, cognition, and motor coordination. No experience required.

We are also offering another round of Voice Therapy for Parkinson's (VTP), led by board certified speech and swallowing pathologist Cory O'Brien.

If you are interested in exploring any of the resources we offer, or if you have any questions, Please feel free to be in touch. Also, if there are topics you would like to hear about, or if there is something you would like to share with the community, please let us know.

We look forward to continuing to provide the resources that help you be active, empowered and connected.

Warm regards,

Pnina

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: RICKI LEWIS

Meet Ricki!

Born in New York, but a resident of Tampa for almost 50 years, Ricki is a true Floridian. She moved for work in the 70s and settled in to enjoy the beautiful Florida weather.

Ricki was diagnosed in May 2002. She remembers the day well, as it was also the day of her grandson's high school commencement. Her main symptom was involuntary twitching, but she had mistakenly attributed the symptom to another condition.

Ricki was participating in a clinical trial unrelated to PD when her neurologist noticed her symptoms and diagnosed her with PD.

Ricki first learned about the Philip Shayman Parkinson's Program through an article in the Jewish Press. She was looking for a way to stay on top of the disease and stay active. As Ricki's doctor suggested, the best exercise you can do is the one you will do." She now attends several program classes regularly, including her favorite class, Rock Steady Boxing. She enjoys the variety of exercises, intensity, and most importantly, the people.

In reflecting on the challenges she's faced in relation to PD, Ricki shared that the hardest part can be showing up regularly. Ricki's advice is to keep going even when you don't feel like it, always keep going.

Ricki also shared the silver lining in her PD diagnosisthe friendships she's made on her journey. Comparing it to an episode of Cheers, Ricki appreciates the community she has become a part ofwhere everybody knows your name!

Ricki is an avid traveler and explorer. She's traveled across several different continents, including a scuba diving adventure in the Great Barrier Reef and a D-Day tour across Europe. Ricki's goal is to not let Parkinson's get in the way of doing the things she loves. She knows consistency is the key, and is determined stay involved and continue growing with her community.
