Philippe Charlopin, a pupil of Henri Jayer, claims wines that are accessible young, with obvious aging potential. “The main thing is to let the terroir express itself. For this, my son Yann and I are the least interventionists possible during the vinification. We have a range of 35 appellations, from villages to fine wines. We realize the differences between climates.
The Philippe Charlopin estate is viscerally attached to the Côte de Nuits and Gevrey-Chambertin, the village with nine Grands Crus.
Philippe Charlopin, trained alongside the biggest names in Burgundy, is very demanding with his vines. He likes to let the grapes express themselves to allow all the notes to emerge. Its extremely refined Burgundy wines are delicious, seductive, and smooth.
This family estate, created in 1977 by Philippe Charlopin, has grown considerably, going from one and a half hectares of vines to 25 hectares today.
The vineyards are farmed à la lutte raisonée though there is some interest in moving to organic farming. Processing of the grapes is now a lot less interventionist than it was in Philippe’s early days when he was a devotee of lees stirring of red wines.
