Celebrating 25 Years in April

Phoenix, our founding inspiration, turns 30 years old this March

On April 20th, Phoenix Landing will celebrate its 25th birthday. This milestone is not just a date on the calendar; it’s a heartfelt tribute to the countless individuals and cherished parrots who have woven their stories into the fabric of our mission. Each bird that has found a loving home, every person who has gained valuable insight from one of our classes, or an enchanting moment shared on our ecotours — all of these experiences have contributed to our collective success in advocating for parrot welfare and conservation.

To commemorate our journey, we are creating a montage of photos and videos that reflect the achievements we made together. Maybe you would like to share a cherished moment with us? Perhaps a snapshot or a super short video that encapsulates your unique experience? If so, send it to us at

Coming in April, Phoenix’s Cage Refresh Box

As we look forward to our next 25 years, Phoenix suggests that our bird's cages may deserve a little refreshing upon occasion! Oftentimes we forget that simply adding or changing out perches and toys can make a world of difference to our parrot's daily lives. In this spirit, we will be offering new Refresh Boxes from our store starting in April. These will be regularly updated with new items so you can order as often as you like. The box will be available in multiple sizes, and include new perches and toys (are there ever enough of either?) to help add some new life back into our bird's environments.

Guest Speakers, TWO March Zoom Events!

Avian Ganglioneuritis Made More Understandable with Bob Dahlhausen, DVM

PDD (proventricular dilatation disease) has a new and more descriptive name - Avian Ganglioneuritis (AGN). AGN is often correlated with Avian Bornavirus (ABV) - but not always! These are two distinct diseases that should be addressed independently.

Join us for an important discussion with Bob Dahlhausen, DVM. Dr. Dahlhausen owns Veterinary Molecular Diagnostics (VMD), the only U.S. lab with a patent to test for AGN. This is a complicated disease, but not always symptomatic. We must continue to learn more about how to diagnose and manage it. Dr. Dahlhausen remains on the cutting edge of this important research! IAABC CEUs approved.

Wisdom of the Ages, Live Q&A

No matter how long you have lived with birds, we are all still learners trying to provide the best possible life for the parrots in our care. This will be a live Q&A with some of the wisest and most experienced women we know - Rosemary Low, Chris Shank, and Dr. Susan Orosz. Together they have many decades of experience covering health, flight, welfare, conservation, nutrition, enrichment, and even breeding. Join us and ask questions that may add some extra know-how to your daily life with your birds. Feel free to email us questions or topics of interest in advance, but hopefully you’ll join us live to participate in the discussion.

Our core classes look at the essential ingredients to help parrots thrive in our homes - from nutrition and behavior, to enrichment, health, and anatomy. These classes are open to anyone looking to learn or get some new ideas. Adoption applicants may be asked to complete some brief "homework."

Some of Our Adoptable Birds

We are featuring African grey parrots this month. Sure, they are super smart and appreciate opportunities to show you that (as do all parrots!). Some will allow handling after you earn their trust, others may prefer a "transportation system" like moving via a perch or rope. Or maybe they would simply appreciate a habitat of activities within one general area. Each environment and individual are different, of course. But we do know that no matter their age or background, they are deserving of someone who appreciates them for exactly who they are. To learn more about our adoption process, click here

Wish Lists, Lots of Ways to Help!

  • Small monthly pledges greatly help to sustain us!
  • Check out our Wish Lists on Amazon or Chewy. We always need in shell walnuts and almonds. And this month our most needed requests specifically from our Amazon wish list are pistachios, kamut, quinoa, walnuts and almonds in shell, and Dawn Free and Clear.
  • We also have an Amazon Workshop Wishlist for maintenance, repair, and toy-making. We are constantly fixing cages, doing maintenance in the adoption centers, or conducting Hurricane Helene repair.
  • We're still building the fund to procure generators for the adoption centers so we're better prepared for any future problems, because we also need power for our well water. We are still about $8K short of our goal.
  • Shop at our on-line store, HelpingParrots.com, another essential revenue source for us.
  • Parrot taxi drivers always appreciated! We serve a large area on the east coast, and strive to make the best family matches for every bird. If you're interested in helping to transport a bird to their next home, sign up and join us!
  • Become a 2025 Phoenix Landing member. Shopping discounts good for one year from the date joined.
  • Live in the Asheville area? On-site volunteers are always needed for cleaning cages and feeding birds, if you're interested in helping on a regular basis.
  • Monetary donations are always welcome. The parrots appreciate every dollar.
  • Have a car, truck, motorcycle, RV, or boat you would like to donate? Perhaps it is in need of repair? Now you can donate it through the non-profit, CARS, and have it benefit Phoenix Landing Foundation: https://careasy.org/nonprofit/phoenix-landing-foundation.

Non-monetary donations may be sent to:

Phoenix Landing 31 Landing Place, Alexander, NC 28701

Please drop us a note at contact@phoenixlanding.org if you purchase something for us, including if you'd like a thank you note, as vendors rarely tell us who generously purchases something for us. Thanks for helping parrots!
