What The Budgerigar Can Teach Us About Parrot Care with Dr. Amy Zhao from The Budgie Academy
October 14th, 1:00pm EDT
The budgerigar is one of the world's most popular parrots. These small grass parakeets have captivated the world for many decades and, as a result, are at the center of many studies looking into their biology, nutrition, reproduction, and behavior. These studies unlocked a world of knowledge about them--their opportunistic breeding behavior, how they regulate their reproductive hormones and egg laying, their unique nutritional needs, and more. This event is not just for those with budgies!

Nutritional Information and Cuisine with Karmen Budai from Polly's Natural Boutique
November 18th, 1:00pm ET
Karmen is the author of several cookbooks for birds, starting with her 2018 book called A Parrot’s Fine Cuisine Cookbook and Nutritional Guide. She was inspired to help her own parrot, a cockatoo named Polly. Karmen discovered the value of organic raw foods, herbs, teas, sprouts, and holistic medicines. Karmen is very creative with recipes and ideas, and it’s often how we present food to our birds that can inspire them to eat the good stuff.

These self-paced core classes cover some of the essentials for parrot care: from health and safety, to nutrition, behavior, and enrichment. These classes also coincide with our adoption process. However, anyone is welcome to participate, whether you are new to birds or just looking for some fresh ideas and info. Your birds are always learning, and we hope you will as well!

Pumpkins are for parrots too! Not only are pumpkins excellent for bolstering vitamin A, essential for parrot health, but think of all the fun ways it can be served. Try offering it whole, skewered, lightly steamed, as a mash ingredient, scooped out and serve breakfast a la pumpkin, or make pumpkin bread (recipe card). Read more about pumpkins in a prior post: Pumpkin blog post
