New Ideas for 2023
For the 2023 race season, the Greater Yellowstone Adventure Series (GYAS) will be making some changes. We hope these changes will make the series more fun, more interesting, more family friendly, more challenging, and offer an even better race experience in the mountains surrounding Yellowstone National Park than before.
First up is our new race schedule. Rather than seven events in 10 days, we are scheduling in three consecutive weekends in July. This is one weekend before the 4th of July and then two weekends after the 4th. Take a look.
-
July 1 – 12th Annual Madison Triathlon
-
July 2 – 12th Annual Madison Duathlon
-
July 8 – 16th Annual Madison Marathon (full/half)
-
July 9 – 9th Annual Big Sky Marathon (full/half)
- July 14 – The Inaugural Madison Ultra 100 (50K Up and 50K Down)
-
July 14 – 4th Annual Madison Ultra Down (50K)
-
July 15 – 28th Annual Madison River Run (a.k.a. Water to Whiskey 5K)
-
July 16 – 7th Annual Tour de Gravelly
We are also getting creative with some new race products and new challenges. These are races you can sign up for as well as prizes to be won if you’re ready to take on an immense challenge. What do you think of these apples?
The Whole Smash – Completing all seven races in one season – Special trophy
Madison Trifecta – New trophy and medal with new dates to earn a TBA title for completing the Madison Triathlon, Madison Duathlon, and Madison Marathon over two weekends (July 1, 2, and 8).
Double Marathon – Special medal for double marathon runners on the Madison and Big Sky (full and half).
My Double Marathon – Special medal for your combination on the Madison and Big Sky, i.e. one full and one half marathon.
My Trifecta – Athletes choose their own three races to compete in for a special ‘My Yellowstone Trifecta’ prize.
The Neil Challenge – Will someone please beat Neil Andrews to the finish line!!!! The guy has won the Madison Duathlon 11 times in a row. Do so and you earn free entry for the Madison Duathlon for the next two years.
MU 100 – Be among the first athletes to do Montana’s newest 100K and earn a special trophy
BQ on the Big Sky – We are seeking Boston Qualifier status for the Big Sky Marathon in 2023. There will be a special prize for anyone who qualifies for Boston in their age group on the Big Sky.
Sub-three Madison Marathon (men) – Special Prize to be announced because this challenge is damn near impossible
Sub-3:30 Madison Marathon (women) – Special Prize ‘cuz no female runner has come close to a 3:30.
Sub-1:25 Madison Half Marathon (men) – Special Prize because the current course record is 11 years old (1:26:28 by Thomas Jodoin).
Sub-1:40 Madison Half Marathon (women) – Special Prize because the current course record is also 11 years old (1:39:17 by Megan Ross).
Sub-four Tour de Gravelly – Special Prize because of the small problem of a 40-mile uphill at a high elevation.
Inaugural Winter Event – We’re working out the details for a cross country ski race of 5K, 10K, and 25K in Virginia City (February or March 2023). We want to make the GYAS a dual season race series.
Madison Triathlon – We have a new date and a new finish line at Pony Park
Madison Duathlon – We have a new date and a new finish line at Discovery Park in Virginia City
Big Sky Marathon – As noted above, we are submitting everything we can to gain Boston Qualifier status for 2023 and beyond.
Madison Ultra 100 – In the ultra world, we are stepping up. We will offer the Madison Ultra Down (50K downhill route from Monument Ridge to Varney Bridge) as before, but also a new race of 100K which is 50K up (Varney Bridge to Monument Ridge) and then 50K down (from Monument Ridge back to Varney Bridge). Be among the first to do this new race!
GYAS Ambassador Program – We want to recruit ambassadors to drum up participation. Email us if you’re interested in recruiting runners from your area.
New GYAS Website – Last but not least, we are building a new website with a new URL. Stay tuned for YellowstoneAdventureSeries.com at the beginning of the year.
