I have been asked many times "What kind of art did your mother collect?" At the Artist-as-Collector Exhibition at Roanoke College people will be able view works from my mother's private collection.
This collection is not rare or important, as my mother told people. She considered it a modest collection of works by wonderful, dedicated artists, some of whom my mother knew as personal friends. She was especially proud of her collection of works by women artists.
According to my mother, "One thing that collecting art can teach the collector is that the art is lent to us to take care of for a short time before going on to another owner- be that a person or an institution".
The works represent many decades of collecting and range in styles from Realism to Abstract Expressionism to Postmodernism. The collection is comprised of works from over 50 artists such as Josef Albers, Alexander Calder, Helen Frankenthaler, Ellsworth Kelly, Alice Neel, Louise Nevelson, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
