Dear Friends,
Last week I flew into NY to see the exhibition titled Dorothy Gillespie: Immersed in Color on Paper and Aluminum in the LeCroy Gallery at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) in Queens, New York. Next month I will attend the "Opening Reception" 2-4pm on Friday April 21.
The NY Hall of Science was founded at the 1964-65 World's Fair and has evolved into New York's center for interactive science, serving a half million students, teachers, and families each year.
Some of you might know that in my mother's 1966 NYC Flag Show at the Gertrude Stein Gallery in NYC, she experimented with new materials, in this case Mylar, which is a reflective material, lighter than cellophane and stronger than steel of its own thickness. She first used Mylar on flat surfaces then applied it to three dimensional surfaces and "as they say the rest is history".
I don't think my mother ever imagined that one day her metal sculptures would be on display in the NY Hall of Science on the grounds of the 1964 World's Fair which she visited 37 times.
