Quick Tip: Straighten your Horizon using Photoshop

Question -

This subject came up at a recent workshop I gave, so "by popular demand":  "How do you straighten the horizon of your image using Photoshop?"

Answer -

If the horizon in your digital image isn't straight, it can really be distracting. Here's an easy way to straighten it in Photoshop and Elements:

CS5:

A) Choose the "Ruler Tool" - To access, click the "Hidden Tool Triangle" in your Tools Panel under the "Eyedropper Tool".

B) Draw a line along your horizon.

C) Press the "Straighten" button in the Options Bar at the top of your program.

CS4 and earlier:

A) Choose the "Ruler Tool" (It's called the "Measure Tool" in CS2 and earlier) - To access, click the "Hidden Tool Triangle" in your Tools Panel under the "Eyedropper Tool".

B) Draw a line along your horizon.

C) Go to the "Image" menu, choose "Image Rotation" (or "Rotate Canvas" in earlier versions), choose "Arbitrary...", leave the number and direction alone, and click "OK".

Elements:

A) Choose the "Straighten Tool" in your Toolbox.

B) Before drawing the line, choose "Canvas Options" from the Options Bar at the top of your program - I recommend "Crop to Remove Background".

C) Draw a line along your horizon.

Viola! Your horizon is now straight! By the way, this technique works equally well if you need to straighten vertically, such as architectural photography.
