In May 2020, The National Physical Activity Plan Alliance, The National Physical Activity Society, and The National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity merged as the foundation for the Physical Activity Alliance - a new, broadly based, powerful voice for physical activity promotion in our country.

The Inequality of American Parks

Since 2011, The Trust for Public Land (TPL) has kept track of green space availability across U.S. metros, using the ParkScore index, which measures how well cities are meeting their residents’ need for parks based on four metrics: park access, acreage, investment and amenities. This year for the first time, the group added equity as a fifth metric.

An Analysis of Traffic Fatalities by Race and Ethnicity

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) issued a new report that analyzed data for the five-year period 2015-2019 and found that traffic crash fatalities disproportionately affect Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC).

This study, An Analysis of Traffic Fatalities by Race and Ethnicity, is the first national analysis of this topic in more than a decade and identifies actions State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs), communities and their partners can take to advance just and equitable outcomes in traffic safety for all roadway users, regardless of race.

Where Does Your City Rank Among America's Fittest Cities?

Earlier this week, The American College of Sports Medicine and the Anthem Foundation published the annual American Fitness Index ranking the nation’s 100 most populous cities by 34 variables of personal health behaviors, outcomes and community indicators such as air quality and walkability. The report aims to evaluate a community’s strengths and resources to bolster healthy living and barriers that prevent people from staying fit.

CDC Foundation Public Transportation Action Guide for Public Health Care Professionals

The action guide synthesizes lessons learned from a project examining the role of public health in addressing social determinants of health through community-wide interventions, including the introduction or expansion of public transportation systems.

Safe Routes Partnership recently released “One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: COVID-19’s Impact on Youth Physical Activity and Safe Routes to School,” helps paint a picture of how COVID-19 has impacted physical activity for youth and families. It examines how the past year has limited opportunities for physical activity and changed the way people move throughout their communities.
