Active Transportation
Last week, the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee introduced the INVEST in America Act, their version of the surface transportation bill and It looks great for bicycling and walking. Similar to the recently released Senate Environment and Public Works bill, it includes programs and policies that promote bicycling and walking through significantly increased funding for active transportation infrastructure, improves safety and access, and funds safe routes to school coordinators and requires outreach to rural school districts.
Promoting Physical Activity for Americans Act
The Senate recently introduced S.1301 - Promoting Physical Activity for Americans Act, sponsored by Senators Brown, Wicker, and Capito. This bill require the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to publish updated physical activity recommendations every 10 years based on the latest scientific evidence. More
PHIT Act Introduced in the House
The Personal Health Investment Today Act (PHIT) was re-introduced in the House as H.R. 3109 by Congressman Kind and Representatives Mike Kelly (R-PA), Terri Sewell (D-AL) and Darrin LaHood (R-IL) as co-sponsors. This bill will incentivize physical activity by allowing Americans to use pre-tax dollars—flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs)—to pay for health club memberships, fitness equipment, exercise videos, and youth sports leagues. The Senate bill, S.844, was introduced in March. More

Physical activity bolsters immune function and supports coping with stressful life events, but it has declined during COVID-19 pandemic. The Society of Behavioral Medicine and Physical Activity Alliance recommend federal government action to prioritize and fund physical activity research and to coordinate
physical activity promotion in multiple sectors, including health care.

“Waiving” Goodbye to PE: State Law and School Exemption and Substitution Practices in the United States
The importance of schools providing physical education (PE) and promoting physical activity (PA) and the benefits of PA for children are well documented. However, a majority of students do not get the nationally recommended 60 min of
daily PA. Many states grant waivers, substitutions, or exemptions from PE despite
national recommendations.
This study examined the association between state laws allowing for the use of PE substitutions and exemptions and school-level substitution and exemption practices.

Physical Inactivity Is Associated With a Higher Risk for Severe COVID-19 Outcomes: a Study in 48,440 Adult Patients
A new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has found that physical inactivity is linked to worse COVID-19 outcomes.
The purpose of this study was to compare hospitalization rates, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and mortality for patients with COVID-19 who were consistently inactive, doing some activity or consistently meeting physical activity guidelines.

A “prescription” to sit less and move more is the optimal first treatment choice for reducing mild to moderately elevated blood pressure and blood cholesterol in otherwise healthy adults, according to the new American Heart Association scientific statement published today in the American Heart Association’s journal Hypertension.

Dangerous By Design 2021
The deadliest metro areas and states for pedestrians have been identified in the newest edition of Dangerous by Design 2021.
Over the past decade (2010-2019), the number of people struck and killed by drivers nationwide while walking increased by an astonishing 45%, even as overall fatalities for drivers and passengers increased by just 3.7%.The most recent years on record (2016-2019) are now the four deadliest years for pedestrian deaths since 1990.

Delivering Physical Activity Strategies That Work: Active People, Healthy NationSM
Active People, Healthy NationSM is an initiative led by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to improve the health of 27 million Americans by 2027 by increasing their level of physical activity.1 An earlier commentary provided the rationale and an overall description of Active People, Healthy NationSM. A core goal of this initiative is to galvanize action across communities, government and nongovernmental organizations, and institutions to use a set of proven strategies to increase physical activity.
