NEW! Congressional Physical Activity Challenge
We've challenged Congress to walk the talk. With 400+ participants representing more than 60 congressional offices, the Congressional Physical Activity Challenge is off to a great start. The Congressional Physical Activity Challenge runs April 26 to May 26. Winners are awarded based on individual achievement, office achievement and most office staff participants able to reach the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
The goals of the Challenge are to highlight the importance of regular physical activity, encourage policymakers to prioritize physical activity and make movement more fun, accessible and inclusive.

New Study! Physical Inactivity Is Associated With a Higher Risk for Severe COVID-19 Outcomes: a Study in 48,440 Adult Patients
A new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has found that physical inactivity is linked to worse COVID-19 outcomes.
The purpose of this study was to compare hospitalization rates, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and mortality for patients with COVID-19 who were consistently inactive, doing some activity or consistently meeting physical activity guidelines.

New Publication Features CPSTF-Recommended Strategies to Increase Physical Activity
A new commentary in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health describes strategies proven to increase physical activity and outlines factors to consider when selecting strategies to match community needs.
The strategies are based on he Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommendations and supported by the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee.

Report: Dangerous By Design 2021
The deadliest metro areas and states for pedestrians have been identified in the newest edition of Dangerous by Design 2021.
Over the past decade (2010-2019), the number of people struck and killed by drivers nationwide while walking increased by an astonishing 45%, even as overall fatalities for drivers and passengers increased by just 3.7%.The most recent years on record (2016-2019) are now the four deadliest years for pedestrian deaths since 1990.

Operationalizing and Testing the Concept of a Physical Activity Desert
Children living in a “no park” zone were less active than their counterparts who lived near a park.
This study contributes preliminary conceptual and operational definitions of “physical activity desert.” Future studies of physical activity deserts should be undertaken in larger and more diverse samples.
