Library Programs - March 2024

3rd Annual Pi Day Fundraiser Begins!

Once again, we will be filling the fish bowl with donations to be used for our summer reading programs. We raised $314 which means Mrs. Susan will get a pie in the face from one lucky attendee of our special family night on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Can we beat last year's total? Can we double it and also give Ms. Heather a pie in the face? Yes, Ms. Heather has agreed to take a pie in the face from one of her teens, if we double our goal and reach $628 this year! All monies raised will be used for summer program materials.

Current total raised is $414.25.

Let's keep those donations coming in for our Pi Day Fundraiser!

Donations can be made by cash or check made out to Chartiers-Houston Community Library. Please mark "Pi Day" in the memo of the check.

Storytime Sessions - Monday evenings & Thursday mornings

Our storytimes are held on Monday evenings at 5:30 pm and Thursday mornings at 11:30 am. Sessions will be the same each week. Our storytimes are set up as a Family Style session where grownups are encouraged to attend and participate with their child. Sessions include stories, songs, the calendar and activities for our preschoolers, as well as board books, puzzles, and puppets for all ages (babies-5 years old). We have a lot of fun planned for this month! The Chartiers-Houston Community Library is proud to be a PA Forward Gold Star Library. For more information about PA Forward and the Five Literacies, speak with a staff member or visit the PA Forward website.

Registration is not required, however it is recommended in case we would need to contact participants of any schedule changes.

Thursday Storytimes are set for 11:30 am and take place prior to opening to the public in order to keep the health and well-being of all our youngest readers in mind. For more information or to get on our participant list, please contact library staff at 724-745-4300.

LEGO Bricks Club - Thurs. 3/7 5:30-6:30 pm & Sat. 3/9 2:00-3:00 pm

LEGO Bricks Club is for ages 6 and up (6-9 will work best with grown-up assistance); teens are invited to try the challenge as well.

Twice a month, we will set up a specific LEGO Bricks challenge for anyone ages 6 and up to try. Generally, there is no right or wrong way to build the challenge. We want to see your perspective! *Some examples of recent challenges: zip line creations, upright board creations, parade floats, and the "how tall challenge" with limited number of bricks.

Are you up for this month's challenge: Get Your Motor Running? Mark you calendar and join us on one or both of the dates above.

Adults are invited to join in our LEGO Bricks challenges. Just ask staff for the challenge materials when you visit on one of the two dates.

Teen Night - Monday, March 11th from 4-6 pm!

Stuffy Taxidermy

Does your teen have an old stuffy they just can't seem to part with? Or do they have a unique sense of creativity that needs an outlet? Then stuffy taxidermy is for them. Participants are welcome to bring their own stuffy or use recycled ones we provide. Materials and instructions will be offered and Ms. Heather will have some fun facts about the art of taxidermy.

All Teen Nights are FREE and open to any students ages 10-17. Registration is not required but would be very helpful to prepare enough supplies.

To register or for more information call the library at 724-745-4300.

Chronicles of Yarnia - Monday 3/18/24 4-6 pm

The next meet-up for Chronicles of Yarnia will be March 18th. We have materials to work with for any beginners to the craft. Check out materials from our Fiber Arts Collection before buying your own. See staff for more details.

NEW PROGRAM!

Afternoon Tea! - Wednesday, March 27, 2024 2:00-4:00pm

MARCH MADNESS BOOK CHALLENGE

During the four weeks of March, votes can be cast for favorite children/youth books. Books will begin in a bracket of 16 and will be decreased each week until only one winner is announced. Vote once per visit to get an entry for a STEM related prize. See staff for more details.

March Book Madness will run from March 4th through March 30th. Only one vote per visit.

3rd Annual Peeps Diorama Contest

Once again, the Chartiers-Houston Community Library will be hosting a Peeps Diorama Contest. This year's theme is Sci-Fi. Create a diorama using peeps as characters and design a science-fiction scene. Title your piece and submit it for a chance to win small prizes. See the entry form for all of the rules and details of this year's contest.

Teen Volunteer Opportunities

TEENS (13-17) ONLY:

Our teen volunteers work hard on preparing items for programs, setting up for events and holidays, and just lending support where needed. We can always use a few extra young hands and ideas here at the library. Teens who need hours for school or other organizations can work their time at the library. We have some wonderful young adults in the Chartiers-Houston Community! Would your teen like to join them here and have fun while helping out?

If you know of a teen who would like to join our group of volunteers and/or Teen Advisory Group, have them get in touch with Mrs. Susan or Ms. Heather at (724) 745-4300 or email chcommunitylibrary@gmail.com.

Teens who need legal community service hours are also welcome to contact the library. Please speak with Mrs. Susan about the paperwork required to sign up for volunteer time.
