Are you planning to watch the Super Bowl this weekend? Whether or not you're a football fan, we hope your weekend is filled with quality time with family and friends.  Below are simple suggestions for a game-day meal or a family potluck:
  • Cheese and crackers. Need we say more? We have several delicious cheese vendors ready to share their savory treats with you on Saturday.
  • Salsa. Did we mention how much we love our farmers and admire their dedication? Because of their hard work, you can enjoy greenhouse-grown tomatoes in the dead of winter, which you can easily turn into the perfect salsa! Or check out prepared jars of salsa from our vendors.
  • Looking for something a little more interesting? Whip up some beet hummus and serve your favorite seasonal veggies, such as carrots, on the side.
  • It's easy to quickly prepare deviled eggs using pasture-raised eggs. Yum!
  • Want something a little more filling? Pick up any type of meat from our vendors for a hearty meal. And don't forget to break out your crock pot and brew up a delicious chili!

Our list can go on and on. Support your local food producers and our Durham community through your Super Bowl food choices this weekend and enjoy the delicious flavors of winter!

Need a healthy Super Bowl meal?
Roasted Veggies & Quinoa
Ingredients:
  • 2-3 Large Sweet Potatoes
  • 1 Large Red Onion
  • 4 Large Carrots
  • 3-4 Beets
  • Thyme, Parsley & Salt
  • 2-3 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
  • 1 Cup Cooked Quinoa (or grain of choice)
Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Wash and peel vegetables and chop into small cubes. Mix vegetables in a bowl with melted coconut oil, dried parsley, thyme and salt. Spread vegetables out evenly on a pan and put in oven to roast.
  3. After about 20 minutes stir the vegetables so they cook evenly. Roast for about 35-40 minutes total or until veggies are soft and onions are caramelized.
  4. Warm up cooked quinoa and set in a large bowl on the side. Once the veggies are done roasting, serve them over the quinoa. Then, top with your favorite seasoning, such as hot sauce, cheese, spices, and more. This meal is the perfect entrée and can also serve as a side dish along with delicious meat from the market.
  5. Enjoy!

Become a friend of the
Durham Farmers' Market!
The Durham Farmers' Market has been a community destination in downtown Durham since 1999 thanks to YOU, our loyal customers and supporters. Over the years we have grown the Market and continue to provide Durham with an event that nourishes the soul of our wonderful city.

You may not know that the Market operates primarily off of the weekly stall fees from our farmers and artisans. Despite this modest budget, we are constantly working to make fresh and healthy food accessible to our entire Durham community.  We want to continue expanding the offerings of our Market and need your help to make this happen.

The Friend of Durham Farmers' Market program provides an opportunity for you to invest in the future of the Market by making recurring or one-time contributions via PayPal or check. Examples of how we will use the funds include expanding our children's programming, continuing our outreach efforts to underserved communities in Durham, developing our nutrition education programs, and increasing staff hours. In addition to being part of a community effort to support others, a friend of the Market will receive a button to proudly display on their trusty Market tote.

We know that for some, resources are tight. If donations are not an option and you do not have time to volunteer, you can share what we do or visit us on Facebook or Instagram. If you would like to volunteer, we have several opportunities available including assisting at the Information Table, leading cooking demos, fundraising, and much more.   If you are interested in sharing your time with the Market, please e-mail us.

We invite you to invest in your Market. Please continue stimulating our local food economy and join our effort to build a stronger, healthier Durham. Thank you!

My grandfather was a leading coffee roaster in Venezuela and I wanted to continue this family tradition in my local community. My goal is to create moments involving coffee that connect the international community, that provides us with coffee, with our our local community. We are excited to be able to foster this vision by being at the Durham Farmers' Market, providing you with cups of brewed coffee and bags of whole bean coffee. FROM THE SEA TO YOUR TABLE...DON'T MISS OUT!

Renee Perry & Steven Goodwin
Cedar Island, NC
Chapel Hill Creamery
Come to market for our fresh and aged cheeses, whey fed pork, and delicious ground beef. Our Hickory Grove pictured here is a washed rind cheese which is also known as a monastery cheese. It's named for the Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church which is close to our farm. This cheese is savory, buttery and supple and it melts beautifully like a raclette cheese. Use for grilled cheese sandwiches, omelets, cheeseburgers, or serve with apples. All our cheese comes from our Animal Welfare Approved Jersey cows. Their rich milk adds a depth of flavor to complement the various types we make.

We will also have Dairyland Farmers, Calvander, Pheta, and a little Carolina Moon.

Whey fed pork comes from the pigs raised on our farm. This is a sustainable way to use the whey that comes from cheese making. It is nutritious for the pigs and we can sell delicious pork at the market. Sausage is made with the hams, not just the trimmings of pork, which adds to the flavor our customers love. Sausages include Sage and Maple Breakfast links, Mild Country Breakfast, Mild Italian, Hot Italian, Bratwurst, Chorizo, Polish, and Smoked Andouille. We also have ground pork, bacon, ham hocks, and spare ribs.

Ground beef is $6.00 per pound and delicious. Pick some up for burgers, spaghetti, or chili.

We have joined the Orange County Living Wage program which sets a wage level for employees at our farm. We are excited to join other businesses in Orange County which participate in this program. Find more information on their website or Facebook page.  See you at market!

Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.

This week we will be sampling: the newest release of our Honey Chai Mead, like a warm mug of chai tea, our Honey Chai Mead is a loaded infusion of exotic spices, mingled with honey. Smooth, semi-sweet, and especially comforting in chilly months.

We will also be sampling our Vanilla Mead, an infusion of Madagascar & Tahitian vanilla beans in our orange blossom semi-sweet traditional mead creates creamsicle bliss.
