Are you planning to watch the Super Bowl this weekend? Whether or not you're a football fan, we hope your weekend is filled with quality time with family and friends.  Below are simple suggestions for a game-day meal or a family potluck:
  • Cheese and crackers.
Need we say more? We have several delicious cheese vendors ready to share their savory treats with you on Saturday.
  • Salsa. Did we mention how much we love our farmers and admire their dedication? Because of their hard work, you can enjoy greenhouse-grown tomatoes in the dead of winter, which you can easily turn into the perfect salsa! Or check out prepared jars of salsa from our vendors.
  • Looking for something a little more interesting? Whip up some beet hummus and serve your favorite seasonal veggies, such as carrots, on the side.
  • It's easy to quickly prepare deviled eggs using pasture-raised eggs. Yum!
  • Want something a little more filling? Pick up any type of meat from our vendors for a hearty meal. It's a great time to break out your crock pot and brew a delicious chili.
  • Don't forget your drinks! We have you covered with kombucha, mead, beer and more.
Our list can go on and on. Support your local food producers and our Durham community through your  Super  Bowl food choices this weekend and enjoy the delicious flavors of winter.

See you tomorrow!

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Fridays from 3-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.

This week we will be sampling: our newest release of Ginger Mead, using local ginger root - dried, juiced and grated - to infuse the soothing and warming qualities of ginger into an aged semi-sweet dark wildflower honey traditional mead.

We will also be sampling our Honey Chai Mead, like a warm mug of chai tea, our Honey Chai Mead is a loaded infusion of exotic spices, mingled with honey. Smooth, semi-sweet, and especially comforting in chilly months.

And we will also be our latest release of Fig Orange Mead, a semi-sweet mead delightfully nuanced with caramelized honey, and fresh fig notes. Made with local, roasted celeste and brown turkey figs, NC wildflower honey, and orange blossom honey.

We will also have bottles available of our Strawbanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead with fresh strawberries and a spicy kick; and our Hibiscus Lemonthyme Mead, floral, earthy and herbal dry-style mead with NC wildflower honey.

Chapel Hill Creamery
Danziger is a winner of a Good Food Award for 2019. Both Calvander and Danziger were finalists and Danziger was one of 18 cheeses to win an award. It is our washed rind cheese that has a smooth texture from the milk of our Jersey cows with a bit of funk to the flavor. Not too strong for almost anyone to enjoy. It is named for Erwin Danziger who was a professor at UNC and owned the land we bought for the farm. Danziger was his favorite and he agreed to let us name it for him.

Paneer is available this Saturday; it can be gently fried and added to any vegetable or curry. Cook greens sautéed with Indian spices and a little cream for Saag Paneer or make peas and cheese (Mattar Paneer). It is being used at Lantern Restaurant in a winter squash salad. Other cheeses are fresh Dairyland Farmers, Hot Farmers, Hickory Grove, 9-month old Calvander, and Carolina Moon. Ask for a sample or serving suggestions if there is one you haven't had. Our Dairyland Farmers and Hickory Grove melt well, Calvander is wonderful grated onto polenta or salads, and Carolina Moon is our Camembert style, good with a crusty bread.

Our pork is from our whey fed pigs and our sausages are made with the hams for extra meatiness. We'll have Mild and Hot Italian, Mild and Hot Breakfast, Sage and Maple links, Bratwurst, Polish with mustard and garlic, and our Mexican spiced Chorizo. Pick up a copy of our sausage and kale soup recipe for a chilly day.

We also have spare ribs, ground pork, and bacon. Our bacon is cured with molasses instead of sugar with no added nitrates and can be used for breakfast, shrimp and grits, or crumbled over hearty salads. Pick up our flavorful Ground Beef for a cheeseburger with Hickory Grove or a flavorful chili. See you at market!

Caballo Rojo Coffee
My name is Gabriela Kavanaugh and I am owner and roaster for Caballo Rojo Coffee, roasting locally here in Durham. My grandfather was a leading coffee roaster in Venezuela and I wanted to continue this family tradition in my local community. My goal is to create moments involving coffee that connect the international community,  that provides us with coffee, with our our local community. We are excited to be able to foster this vision by being at the Durham Farmers Market, providing you with cups of brewed coffee and bags of whole bean coffee.
