JULY 2021

A Message From Michelle

The summer heat has taken hold and in a flash of a second, we pause to realize we are halfway through 2021!

It’s amazing how despite all that might be happening around us, time marches on. We mark that time with celebrations, vacations, and reunions.

This message today is nothing more than a reminder to strive never to take those ‘small’ moments for granted. We’ve all been through a year and a half of stress; unlike any that most of us have endured. It’s been the stress of fear, dread and uncertainty; never quite knowing what might be around the corner. But each morning, we all got up, grabbed our Superman (or woman!) capes and went out the door to face whatever life threw in our direction. Some days were better than others; we soared through them with hands in the air screaming, “Yes, we GOT this!”…and then other days, we tore off that cape in defeat feeling as if the world was closing in around us.

But as I said, this message is about rising up! We are hopeful, we are strong, we are resilient! Our Pickering Manor residents, families and staff have trusted the process and held on through all this adversity.

We celebrate with one another now; able to witness the milestones of life…graduations, weddings, babies, birthdays! Times when we gather to share food and laughter with one another (safely)! We reunite with our families who we haven’t seen in so long; trying desperately to make up for lost time and promising to never lose sight of what a hug really feels like! I’m planning a trip ‘home’ to Kentucky soon and am so excited to see my family, the roots that feed my heart each time I go there. We all have those places and spaces that fill us up; that remind us of a time when life was slower and summers were forever long….

So let’s all grab up these moments together and weave them into a warm blanket we’ll wrap around ourselves when life gets cold. We’ll enjoy the sun, the heat, the humidity…and the pop-up lemonade stand across the street from Pickering; the cantaloupes growing in a little garden around the corner; the music and laughter coming from the corners of our lives; the screeches of excitement from little granddaughters in a pool…and we’ll celebrate this beautiful summer together!
Happy July!!

Renovations to our East Wing are scheduled to be completed in July. In addition, we anticipate our new Memory Care Unit will be in operation by the end of 2021. The fence installation for the Memory Care Garden is in progress. Once completed, it will be a fully secure outdoor environment specifically designed with calming water features for our residents with memory impairment.
We'd like all our families, our volunteers, and the public to be aware of Pickering's updated visitation policy. Please click on this link to read through the procedures.
The fall fundraising season is almost here and we could use your help. We need donations to create our Sips and Suds Virtual Mystery Baskets! Last year's event raised over $15,000 and we hope to beat that goal in 2021! Items most needed are beer, wine, liquor, sports tickets, and gift cards. Please contact Jen Miller at (215) 968-3878 Ext. 1112 or email jmiller@pickeringmanor.org if you'd like to donate. Thank you!
Happiest of birthdays went out to Pickering Manor's next Centenarian Irene Bittner who celebrated that milestone on June 28! Irene's family helped us to celebrate in style, with cupcakes, photos, a Happy 100th Birthday letter from President Biden, a celebratory scotch, and a special Proclamation from State Representative Perry Warren!

We were honored to have CBS3 stop by to mark the occasion. If you missed the segment live on the air, or would like to watch again, please click here!

Happiest of birthdays to our residents celebrating a birthday this month:

Please note it is not too late to be a part of our Capital Campaign. We have reached 70% of our goal of $1.5 million. We encourage all potential and existing donors to explore doubling their gift through their employer’s Matching Gift program. You can give online or call our Development Department for more information at (215) 968-3878 ext. 1112.
