A Message From Michelle
“Feeling gratitude and not saying it is like buying a gift and not giving it”....John Chambers

You will not find this quote in a history book nor will you find it penned to paper in a book on the shelves of a dusty library. This quote came to me in a conversation from a dear friend of Pickering Manor whose father had just passed away. She shared it with me as she was leaving my office. She had been describing her father to me and the strong relationship they had shared. She said, “You know Michelle, my Dad always said this to me"....

I asked her permission to share this with all of you because while simply stated, it is profound. She graciously agreed:

While we all are incredibly distracted by the adjustments we’ve had to make in our lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s imperative that we not forget the basic elements that provide us strength and ground us to our own narrative; our own story. I believe we need to go back to those simple statements that provide us comfort, because God knows, we all need a little comforting right now. Reminisce and consider the people in our lives that have given us joy; our families, our friends, our co-workers, our congregations of supporters that lift us up simply by their presence.
I believe that if we pause, we all might consider moments in our past where we wish we had a ‘do-over’. Times that we let slip past without an apology to someone because it would have been ‘awkward’. Instances when we could have reached out to someone we knew was hurting but decided we didn’t want to ‘intrude’. Days that slipped by without talking to someone we loved until suddenly, those days had turned into weeks and months.

During this incredible time in our history, I suggest we take Mr. Chambers’ words and make them our own. Thank others for their kindness; reach out to those who may be lonely, isolated or anxious; offer to do something for someone who may not be able or comfortable to do it themselves...and when someone you care about floats through your mind, pause a moment, and reach out to let them know you care about them. Whether we realize it or not, I’m certain it’s what we all need right now.

So, once again, my gratitude is to our Pickering community of residents, families, staff, neighbors, and board members. You all are the reason for our success and we feel your love and support each and every day.

Happy July!

COVID-19 Update
We are thrilled to announce that Pickering Manor was completely COVID-19 free in our resident and employee populations as of Friday, June 26. As many of you know, Pickering Manor has only had one employee test positive and zero resident cases throughout the entire course of the pandemic!

We are also pleased to report that Pickering Manor received zero deficiencies in our COVID-19 reporting after the recent surprise visit from the Health Department!

If all goes as planned, we look forward to welcoming all visitors including residents' loved ones, friends, and volunteers back in the building at the end of July.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we raised over $7,000 for our COVID-19 emergency fund! The funds were used to purchase iPads for residents' use! We look forward to the ability all our residents will now have to quickly video connect to loved ones, friends, and vital telehealth services for many years to come!
iPad Fundraiser Update
These 20 new iPads were purchased thanks to funds raised during our COVID-19 Emergency Fund Drive back in March. Stay tuned for more photos in next month's newsletter and thank you again to our generous donors who gave to this initiative!
Pickering Manor's Commitment to the Community

Since the pandemic broke, Pickering Manor's staff have collected food and other household necessities to donate to our neighbors whose income has been reduced or eliminated due to unemployment caused by COVID-19. These families have had to rely more on local food pantries to make ends meet during the pandemic. To date, Pickering Manor has been able to donate over 100 pounds of food and supplies to our local food pantries!
