Dear Friends,
The crisp Fall air is here, and all the fun Fall activities have begun. Red October is going strong, and it has been a fun-filled ride rooting on the Phillies and the Eagles! Both teams have come out of the gate beating everyone in their way. Here at Pickering, we are celebrating our Diamond Jubilee of sixty years serving Newtown and the surrounding communities.
It is in October when Mr. Russell Pickering was born. Who would have known back then the legacy he would leave to this community and its seniors. Pickering Manor was established at the behest of Mr. Pickering when he passed. His objective was to provide a place for his loyal and supportive staff to live when he passed.
Upon Mr. Pickering’s death, Pickering Manor Home was established. It was both a boarding home and a place for seniors to live in a nursing home. We started small with boarding units in Mr. Pickering’s home and the addition of the East Wing as a Nursing Home. After that, we grew to include the West Wing of the Nursing Home and the original Personal Care/Boarding Home on the ground floor. As the needs of seniors grew, so did Pickering. The next expansion was the Cottages and the expansion of our Personal Care to include a total of twenty-two rooms. Soon after that, we added our apartments and the final two cottages.
Pickering maintained this configuration for over thirty years until we enclosed the courtyard between the East and West Wings, which is now our Atrium and enjoyed by our Skilled Nursing residents. Our next and largest expansion was the addition of the Yates Pavilion. This addition doubled the size of our existing footprint and created a dedicated Rehab Neighborhood and Memory Care Neighborhood. Our Memory Care Neighborhood is the latest addition to the Pickering community and has been open for a little over a year.
So, as the Pickering community celebrates Mr. Pickering’s birthday and the sixty years of Pickering Manor, we also look back and see the legacy of kindness and dedication that he instilled in all of those who have lived, worked, volunteered and supported Pickering Manor for the last sixty years. It is an honor to work at Pickering Manor and a responsibility that I take very seriously in leading it into the future, but not forgetting our rich and dedicated past.
I want to remind all our families, staff and supporters that we will be celebrating our Diamond Jubilee at our fifth annual Sips n’ Suds event on November 11, 2023 at the Rafters in Newtown. Please help and support Pickering by attending, donating or sponsoring this event and help us continue the awe-inspiring legacy that Mr. Pickering left us!
