The 2004 girls team ventured south of the border recently to participate in the Great Lakes Regional Futsal Championship, a qualifier for National Championship in February.
After a disappointing opening game loss, the girls showed character and resilience and bounced back with a convincing 6-2 win, which resulted in a 2nd seed heading into the semi-finals.
In the semifinals, Pickering was matched up against the undefeated #1 seed ABK Futsal Academy, an experienced team favoured to win the tournament. Coach Desi had the team well prepared after a film session on the opposition and a solid game plan.
The game was a closely contested match that resulted in a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation time.
To decide who would move into the Finals, the teams went straight to a penalty shootout that required 7 rounds to decide a winner. In the end, Pickering secured the victory after GK Jenine Alkhatib made a diving penalty save!
In the Finals, Pickering was dominant and coasted to a 9-1 victory to bring the Championship trophy back to Canada.
Congratulations to all players and PSC Coach Desi Humphrey!
The team also wishes to extend its gratitude to Mike Wadsworth who sponsored the team to help offset tournament costs. Much appreciated!
