THE HUB DIRECTOR'S CORNER

On my mind and from the heart...

Recently, I got to take a much needed vacation. While enjoying the wave pool at our hotel, I witnessed an unfortunate incident.

There we were, splashing,l aughing and dodging the waves, when there was a loud whistle and a bunch of commotion on the other side of the pool.

As I looked to see what was going on, a man was drowning in the four foot pool of waves. His face was panic stricken and he looked so scared and helpless as the waves pulsed over his head and knocked him under repeatedly. As the lifeguards rushed over to save him a few things rushed through my head.

The man that was struggling and drowning was, from all outside appearances, a healthy, capable man. He looked like he was strong and able bodied and I was thinking, "Why is he drowning? Maybe he is extremely scared or is having a heart attack?" I must not have been the only person thinking this as other people around me were verbally making comments that were a little more harsh. Some were laughing at the man, who looked to all outside reasons to be able to stand up and just get a breath. Some were yelling, "Stand up, get up, what is wrong with you?”

After the lifeguards descended on him I cleared away from the bystanders area and moved on with my vacation, not really giving much thought to the whole ordeal. Until later the next day. I was walking through the hotel and had to stop for a moment to let a wheelchair pass through a narrow corridor. As the chair went by I made eye contact with the man in the chair and smiled.

It was then that I saw him. He looked much different than he had when he was struggling for a breath and panicked in the wave pool. But it was him, in a wheelchair moving past me through the hallway. I had to stop myself from saying anything. Really what do you say? He was probably embarrassed or traumatized and would want to forget the whole incident. Did he hear the things that the bystanders were saying as he was fighting for breath? Literally laughing that he didn’t just stand up.

Isn’t that the case so many times, in so many ways? We make snap judgments based on the limited information that we think we have and jump to conclusions. We tell people to just pull themselves up by their bootstraps, go get a job and get off the street. Just muscle through the day, smile and it will be all right. But what is below the surface? Maybe, just maybe, someone is unable to just stand up and stop drowning.
