VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
When Mr. Rogers said, “look for the helpers,” he definitely had Julington Creek resident, Sherrie Venturi, in mind. Sherrie has a long history of being a helper. And because of many talents, she is able to help on a dime and use her many skills to find a way to bring support to whomever she is helping. Sherrie first came to Pie in the Sky many years ago to help at the food pantry in Hastings. Being the forward thinker that she is, not to mention a gourmet cook, Sherrie began serving hot meals utilizing much of the donated food, to give the residents of Hastings ideas on how they might introduce new foods into their diets. Like many helpers, her daughter Allie didn’t fall far from the tree. She would bring a mobile library to the food pantry each week and hand out free books and magazines to anyone who wanted them. The pair, along with Sherrie’s husband Franco, were frequent visitors to other Pie events and could always be counted on to volunteer their time and their talents. Sherrie helps many groups in St. Johns County and last year, she made 465 bars of soap as Christmas presents for our seniors. They were a huge hit! She has made coasters and cozies, cards and photos and when COVID-19 became an issue, Sherrie was among the first to make Pie in the Sky their own personal protection masks. As if that wasn’t enough, as requests came in from others for her masks, she asked that the money be donated to Pie in the Sky. Her creativity, her compassion and concern for others in her community and her giving heart, set an example of just who Mr. Rogers was talking about. In times of trouble, look for the helpers and when you do, you will see Sherrie Venturi right on the front lines. Thank you, Sherrie, Allie, and Franco for all you do for Pie and for our community.
PIE IT FORWARD
A big Pie thank you to Spencer Upchurch of Fried Chicken Kitchen who made lunch boxes for our seniors yesterday. Yummy! Located in St. Augustine, Florida,  Fried Chicken Kitchen is a southern food truck and catering company driven by locally-sourced ingredients and timeless family recipes. Fried Chicken Kitchen believes in three simple principals; family, friends, and fried chicken. Check out their local schedule here .
We also want to thank Chef Michael Lugo from Michael's . Inspired by his grandmother at an early age to pursue his passion for cooking, it seems only fitting that Chef Lugo will be serving our seniors a delicious meal of slow-braised short ribs with roasted potatoes and baby carrots. We are excited for our seniors and so very thankful to Shelley Trela, who helped raise the funding to provide this wonderful meal for our seniors and helping us all, Pie It Forward, bringing our community together to help our local restaurants, their employees, and our seniors - especially during these trying times.
