Pieces from Home

The Pieces of Home quilts were made to compliment the Old Town photo shoot. While sewing I would imagine a character for each quilt. Thinking about what memories she would take with her out west and how the fabrics stitched into the quilt she carried would remind her of home. I picked fabrics that represent pieces from home: linen towels, curtains, a floral hankie, an apron, favorite blouse, silk bits and everyday fabrics of life, simply, Life as Quilt.

These small quilts use designer samples, fabrics that after a season would be discarded into the landfill, instead they have become something beautiful. They are hung from metal rings like curtains as a way to display them or as a window treatment.

This series of 3 quilts is available for purchase for $1350

Old Town Photo Shoot

August’s photo shoot, Old Town, portrays the women inhabitants of the old western town as independent, confident, well dressed and each with a story. The final edits from the shoot are still being done, those images will be featured in the next newsletter.

Knowing we would be on location at the Yellowstone Film Ranch, we styled our imagery on first hand accounts from family documents and photos of life in Eastern Montana and historical fiction (My Antonia by Willa Cather and Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes)

What I find most compelling in all the stories are the obstacles women had to overcome socially and physically, finding that not all are cut out for a life that requires grit and knowhow.

What were the circumstances that got them there? Women would have traveled out west with their families or husbands. Some married to escape with the hope of a better life. Women would not have headed west on their own or a “girls trip” with friends. So much of the time we see the saloon girls, which are fun to costume and certainly an icon of the wild west, but in reality that was a very dangerous unglamorous life, with diseases, abuse and early death. This was not a career path most women chose for themselves.

The West is full of pioneer women that overcame difficulties and discomfort for a life rich with family, hope and prosperity. These are the women we wanted to portray in Old Town.

The Gunslinger

The Gunslinger is an unique combination of storytelling and a commercial. This is a narrative short film, supported by Rolls-Royce North America who provided the 2022 Black Badge Cullinan to the film production. Written and directed by Jeremy Heslup and produced by Valkry, it tells the story of the heroine, Isabelle, played by Claudine Quadrat, a fearless saloon girl who must defend her home when a villainous gang overrides her town. The Cullinan is a character and the product. The Gunslinger has been nominated for Best Drama Short for the 2022 International Motor Film Awards in London.

You can watch the 5 minute short film, The Gunslinger-Rolls Royce Western here. I am in the opening sequence and in background scenes as The Tired Woman, a role I embraced.
