INITIAL PIER DISPUTE MEDIATION PRODUCTIVE

Judge Issues Order Temporarily Suspending Deadline for Removal of the Vessel Pending Additional Negotiations

As you know, the Conservancy is committed to communicating openly with our supporters as we work to chart the best possible course for the SS United States’ future given the constraints of our ongoing litigation with the ship's pier operator, Penn Warehousing. This week the Conservancy participated in a court-ordered confidential mediation following our motion to extend the deadline to move the ship due to our landlord's alleged misconduct. Progress toward addressing a range of issues was achieved, but additional time is needed to achieve an amicable resolution of this ongoing dispute. As such, Judge Anita Brody has issued an order temporarily suspending the deadline for the removal of the vessel from Philadelphia's Pier 82 pending continued negotiations between the parties.

Our efforts in the days ahead will continue to center on conducting good faith negotiations with Penn Warehousing and advancing our educational and curatorial mission. We remain steadfast in our determination to ensure that the legacy of America’s Flagship endures and inspires for future generations. We will continue to provide updates as we have them and are able to communicate them. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us with any questions, and thank you so much for your continued support, suggestions, and concern during this challenging time.

CONSERVANCY REMEMBERS RENOWNED TRAVEL JOURNALIST VALARIE D'ELIA

D'Elia Helped Re-Introduce SS United States to the Public, Helped Record Oral Histories of Passengers

The SS United States Conservancy expresses its profound sadness upon the passing for former NY1 and nationally syndicated travel journalist Valarie D’Elia. In the years immediately following the Conservancy’s acquisition of the SS United States, Valarie was instrumental in helping to re-introduce America’s Flagship millions of people worldwide.

Valarie attended the 2018 Conservancy’s “Legacy Cruise” where she recorded interviews with former passengers and crew members that can be found on our YouTube page. She had a tremendous passion and affection for the ship and she will be greatly missed. The Conservancy extends our condolences to her family.

CBS SUNDAY MORNING RE-SHARES FEATURE ABOUT AMERICA'S FLAGSHIP

With the future of the SS United States attracting significant media coverage in recent weeks, CBS News recently re-shared Mark Strassmann’s Feb. 17, 2013 “Sunday Morning” feature about the glamorous history of the SS United States and how it came to inhabit its berth in Philadelphia.

The story does a remarkable job portraying her service career, the passionate supporters who continue to love the historic ocean liner, and the Conservancy's efforts to ensure the legendary ship remains a lasting part of the public's consciousness.

ARTISTS OFFER STRIKING TRIBUTES TO THE SS UNITED STATES

The Conservancy offered a special invitation to artists, photographers, and videographers to tour the SS United States on Labor Day weekend, and we are excited to begin sharing some of the images generated from these unique tours. Philadelphia-area painter Louis Lafferty has created a number of fabulous paintings of our favorite ship, which arrived in Philadelphia when he was only one year old. He has now created over 50 paintings of the Big U, and he says "it has been truly inspiring to see the amount of love and support for the ship."
