Piggy Bank to Savings Account

Home finance school for children

Your daughter begs for that tropical beach hat, but would she feel the same if required to pay by allowance? And could your son live without that youth fair souvenir if he knew it would come out of his savings for the Universal trip?

Experts advise parents to instill in their children as young as preschool the value of earning, saving and managing money and avoiding impulse purchases to increase self-control. And they can learn through everyday activities, whether saving for roller blades or serving the neighborhood fresh lemonade. So discuss family finance goals and values to engage children and foster healthy money mindsets and practices. And be sure to spend how you preach to maximize the impact with every clink in their piggy bank.

Getting to Know Your Children's Friend's Parents

And ways to deal with parents you don't like

If you're lucky, the parents or caregivers of your children's friends will share many if not most of your same values and parenting ideals. But that is not always the case. For these other times, there is still a way to try and navigate relationships with the parents of children your child is friends with without letting parental differences get in the way. Here are some ideas to help you on your way.

Just as your children are starting a relationship with others, so too must parents start a relationship with the parents of their child's friend. It doesn't necessarily have to be a close relationship, but it does have to be filled with respect, understood boundaries and open communication. If we want our children to treat others well, then we must model that behavior with the parents of others.

Miami-Dade Lights Up for The Children's Trust

Several iconic landmarks shine in Trust green as grand finale of 20th Anniversary

Over its first 20 years, The Children's Trust has been a beacon of light for all children and families of Miami-Dade County thanks to the overwhelming majority of voters who created it. And for the past year, The Trust has celebrated its first two decades of serving the community with a campaign educating the public about its engagements and interactions with 2 million children, families and service providers. The celebration culminated on September 7 with a fitting tribute to the light The Trust has shone on Miami-Dade County.

As night descended on South Florida, landmark buildings in downtown Miami and other locations across the county lit up in The Trust's vibrant green-pantone hue while others displayed The Trust's logo or congratulatory messages. Those gazing into the night sky were able to experience a colorful display representative of the reach and impact The Trust has had in our community.

The Trust, JCS, Miami-Dade County & School District Partner for More After-School Choices

Hundreds of after-school programs can now be accessed through the JCS 211 Miami Helpline

With summer fading away and the school year in full swing, parents and caregivers again have decisions to make about how to care for their children after school. While there are many options for parents and their kids, finding the right one to match the academic, social and practical needs of families can be challenging. Luckily, this year there is help accessing hundreds of programs to find the one that is right for you.

The Children's Trust, Jewish Community Services (JCS), Miami-Dade County and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) have partnered to create the More After-School Choices Initiative that gives access to all of their after-school programs in one easily accessible website, 211Miami.org/AfterSchool. The Trust-funded Jewish Community Services (JCS) 211 Miami Helpline lists more than 500 after-school programs alphabetically and parents can also search for programs by their location.

Book of the Month: Platanos Are Love Makes Hispanic Culture Real for Kids

Known as the Gateway to Latin America, Miami-Dade County is perhaps the biggest and best-known metropolitan area with such a diverse group of Hispanic in the world. Every country and culture in Central and South America and the Caribbean is represented. While children from any culture only have to walk outside to see the influence of Hispanic culture on the community, what better way for them to learn about how different Hispanic cultures combine to make their home what it is than through food.

That’s what Alyssa Reynoso-Morris does with her picture book debut Plátanos Are Love. Through a grandmother’s multiple recipes with platanos a young girld learns about how platános represent the past, present, and future of her family.

Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15 and Latinos across the country will be celebrating their stories and the impact their culture has had on their lives. Read more about Platanos Are Love and other Staff Picks from the Miami-Dade County Library System at www.mdpls.org/staff-picks.
