Pigment International is one of the forty independent Chicago-area media outlets, members of the Chicago Independent Media Alliance (CIMA), who are joining forces for their third annual fundraising campaign kicking off October 3. Under the slogan #WeAmplifyChicagoVoices, this diverse and eclectic media group, will conduct a two-week campaign between October 3 – 17. 
 
Those donating to Pigment International during the first two days of the campaign will have their donations matched 2-1, for three times the impact.   Donations will be matched 1-1 for the rest of the campaign, until matching funds are depleted.

“Pigment International is excited to be a part of this dynamic group that uplifts the work of independent publications like ours,” Patricia Andrews-Keenan, co-founder of Pigment International.  “We hope everyone will learn more about the publications and please support us on October 3 and 4 and triple your impact in support of Black fine art.  What an amazing kickoff to Black Fine Art Month."

TWO TIMES THE CHARM 

Pigment International's publication, Pigment Magazine, for the second year has won the publishing industry’s prestigious 2022 Folio: Eddie and Ozzie Awards for “Best Cover Design” for its Winter 2021-22 issue.  Winners were announced at the Eddie/Ozzie Awards held in New York in September 13 at the City Winery.

The cover art is by Nigerian artist REWA and is titled “Somto in Pink Jeans (2021).”  Joe Jones of Elixir Mediaserved as creative director for the Fall/Winter issue that was underwritten by the Field Foundation.  Last year’s winning entry featured a mixed media piece “Fight the Power” by internationally renowned artist Deborah Roberts The inaugural Pigment Magazine was also a finalist for Best Cover Design and featured the work ISYS by James Nelson.  The Eddie & Ozzie Awards place the spotlight on leading editorial and design talents for their exceptional work and is a celebration of the exceptional talent that often inspires innovation in media according to the organizers.

NICK CAVE AND ARVIE SMITH GIVE US BEST PRE-BLACK FINE ART MONTH WEEK EVER

This past Tuesday, in celebration of the exhibition Nick Cave:Forothermore, the MCA hosted a conversation between the artist Nick Cave and curator Naomi Beckwith, covering the breadth of Cave’s groundbreaking and joyous practice. While the MCA exhibit has closed you can see the work of Nick and his brother Jack at the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center through November 27th. 

On Thursday Pigment International hosted a luncheon for Portland artist Arvie Smith and his wife Julie.  Smith was in town for the opening of his exhibition Arvie Smith: Call & Response at Monique Meloche Gallery, the artist’s first commercial exhibition.  Call & Response will be at the gallery through November 5th

Last week’s events were preludes to Black Fine Art Month that opens Sunday, October 2 at the David L. Pierce Art & History Center in Aurora.  Join us for Brunch and Salon Talk from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm at the DLP, followed by a live painting demonstration at the Cotton Seed Creative Exchange.  The Salon Talk will feature artists Jade WilliamsDadasoul Face and Yvonne Toney, owner of Cottonseed.  Artist Isabella Alexia Toney will be featured at the live painting demonstration.
