This virtual Trail Talk with project manager, Steve Bodette, will share a progress report on improvements to a 1.25-mile stretch of the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail. The project, which is now halfway complete, is removing existing asphalt from the trail section and replacing it with concrete. Work is taking place between the overpass at I-25 and Rockrimmon Boulevard north to the confluence of Cottonwood and Monument Creeks, near Pikes Peak Indian Motorcycle.

The new trail section is wider and includes a new gravel running path adjacent to the trail. Bridge decking has also been removed and replaced, plus other stormwater improvements, all aiming to enhance safety and mobility along the popular corridor.
Trail construction on schedule

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department is continuing its maintenance project over the winter months. This timing was chosen to lessen the overall impacts to all trail users. Work is expected to be complete in late spring 2022.
The trail maintenance project includes removing existing asphalt and replacing with concrete.
A work-in-progress as another section of new concrete replaces old asphalt on the 1.25 mile trail section north of Criterium Bicycles.
Other work includes the reconstruction of a retaining wall and new storm drain under the trail corridor to improve drainage.

Similar utility improvements are being made on the west side of the pedestrian bridge by Criterium Bicycles. Utilities are being lowered to reduce the steepness of the trail, resulting in safer grades for trail users.

When complete, the project will result not only in significant improvements to the trail, but also improved overall safety for trail users.
FUNDING
The construction budget of $1 million consists of funds from multiple sources, including a grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation and Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority.
