What’s New for You?
- This week in Lent at Pilgrim
- Anxious Generation Book Study with Sister D’Etta Broam
| | |
Blessed Ash Thursday, Pilgrims!
With our Ash Wednesday worship last night, the Season of Lent is officially among us. If you were unable to attend last night but would like to meet with me to receive ashes along with some brief scripture and prayer, please be in touch.
Take note of the various Lenten offerings around the themes of “Fasting and Embracing” being offered on Sunday nights and other weekend times. Thanks to all those who have responded to let us know they are attending. Be sure to add your name to the lists by either registering online or by signing up in the Narthex starting this Sunday. I’m excited about doing this study on fasting from the things that weigh us down and engaging in more nature-facing events to renew us.
When I returned from my vacation people had two questions right away: “Did you have fun?” And, “Did you hear there was an earthquake very close to your house?” As you can see from this photo of me with my daughter/twin, Elise, on Disney’s Lookout Cay, we had a great time. Fortunately, we had no evidence of the earthquake at our place. Thanks for your concerns and for those who walked around my yard to make sure all was well. So sweet of you!
We are sad as a congregation at the death of Joan Trawick this Tuesday. She was 95. At the time of publication, we didn’t have the funeral arrangements, but we will certainly share those with you as soon as possible.
Lenten blessings. Peace to each of you and to all those around the world!

The things I love about Pilgrim
This past Sunday, I was reminded of the things I love about Pilgrim.
It was a nasty, rain-pouring, wind-blowing kind of morning as we headed out for church on Sunday. That kind of weather often makes us late and grumpy.
As if that wasn’t enough, Wally Steinhauser (and several other people like Carol Murray) had that nasty stomach virus. So, we were scrambling to find another usher (although Rick Morris assured me he could do it alone).
Ryan Mears, our worship assistant, had a cold, but she laughed about it and persevered. Lou Galloway put out wonderful treats on the Hospitality Table.
And, just in the nick of time, David Marshall, who is relatively new at Pilgrim, stepped up and volunteered to usher. Which was good because in spite of that nasty weather, 71 of you still came, and you shook out your raincoats, and you laughed about us all getting soaked.
Pastor David Coffman even whipped out a few jokes during his sermon.
Bottom line, I felt warm and welcome as if it was a wonderful sunny day. I felt your love and your willingness to step up when needed. And isn’t that what church is all about?

A Lent of Fasting and Embracing
A Different Kind of Fasting
On Sundays in Lent, we will gather at 5 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall and will begin with a delicious dinner hosted by our Pilgrim Chef, Jane Park.
At 5:30 p.m., Pastor Mary will lead us in a different kind of fast each week. Using scripture, wisdom from ancient desert mothers and fathers, and spiritual practices, we’ll examine some of the behaviors that distract us from the things that can lead us to the true fullness of life God desires for us.
February 22
Fasting from Fear of Not Having Enough
March 1
Fasting from Holding It All Together
March 8
Fasting from Multitasking
March 15
Fasting from Certainty
March 22

Embracing Spiritual Practices
These four events at the end of each week embrace a practice that supports our fasting from the many behaviors that weigh us down. We hope you’ll take advantage of one or all of them!

March 7 Practice “Shinrin Yoku” (Forest Bathing) with Pastor Mary Anderson at Saluda Shoals Park. 20 people maximum
Pastor Mary is serving at Pilgrim Lutheran and has been intrigued by this spiritual practice from 1980s Japan to relieve stress and anxiety. Forest Bathing is not a hike or an exercise routine but involves slow walking and sitting combined with an awareness of what we are seeing, hearing, and smelling. There will be some suggestions of scripture, prayer, and making of an earth mandala (circle) with found objects in nature to guide your trip through the park. We will start at 9 a.m. and end at 11 a.m., closing with a Tea Ceremony.

Worship Service Volunteers, please read!
You can view the 2026 list of Worship Volunteers in the schedule here. It is always a work in progress. If you notice an error or suspect a conflict, please notify us. We need your help keeping up with them.
Remember, if you can’t cover your assigned job, please find someone to take your place. If you ask, other volunteers will swap weeks with you. Then, once you’ve found someone to take your place, call Courtney Coker in the office, and she can make those needed changes online, in Pilgrim’s Progress, and in the Sunday Bulletin.
