Tonight the Pima JTED (Joint Technical Education District) Governing Board named a new Superintendent. Kathy Prather, Pima JTED’s Deputy Superintendent, will lead the District beginning July 1, 2018, when the current Superintendent, Alan L. Storm, Ph.D., caps a 50-year career in education.
Dr. Storm, who started his career teaching Business Education in Massachusetts, became the first Superintendent/CEO of Pima JTED in 2007. He says he is proud of the fact that despite Arizona’s challenging economic and budgetary times the District has grown from serving 12,000 students in 2007 to approximately 17,000 students at 36 satellite and 13 central campuses.
Under his leadership, Pima JTED purchased or built 17 buildings in the past 11 years with no indebtedness to taxpayers. It started by offering 3 Central Campus programs, and now has 24 such programs which serve approximately 1,600 students each year.
“In addition to travelling and spending more time with family and friends, I plan to continue working in education part-time, reducing my hours from 60 hours a week maybe down to 30,” says Dr. Storm.
“Kathy Prather is uniquely qualified to lead Pima JTED into its next phase of growth,” says Dr. Storm. She was instrumental in the formation of Pima JTED in 2006 while serving as the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Director for Tucson Unified School District. She served in the same capacity at the Sunnyside Unified School District from 2012 until 2017.
“It’s humbling and I consider it to be a great honor that this Board placed their faith in me to lead Pima JTED’s charge to serve students from 14 member school districts, charter schools, and home schools, and to work with business and industry to develop the workforce that will drive our local economy,” says Ms. Prather.
