Monthly Update

Kitten Season is Here

It's raining kittens at Pinal County Animal Care & Control.

In the last few weeks, the shelter has been bombarded with kittens. Sadly, the majority of these litters are being brought in without their mom.

The shelter urges that if you find a litter of kittens under 6 six weeks old, please avoid separating them from their mother. Young kittens have high mortality rates, especially in shelter settings. When kittens are separated from their mom and brought to the shelter, their mortality rate greatly increases. Allowing kittens to stay with the mother cat provides the best chance of survival.

Pinal County Animal Care & Control needs rescue help and experienced foster parents to assist with the around-the-clock care required for the influx of orphaned kittens. To learn more about what to do if you find a litter of kittens, click here.

Finding Fur-ever Homes

46 Dogs and 6 Cats Find Homes During Empty the Shelters

Pinal County Animal Care and Control was invited to participate in the Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters Adopt-a-thon from May 1st-15th.

During this time, the foundation sponsored adoption fees for the shelter. By the end of the adopt-a-thon, 46 dogs and 6 cats were able to find loving homes, including longtime resident, Cacique.

Cacique was at the shelter for almost two years before being adopted during the adopt-a-thon. Staff and volunteers were ecstatic to see the sweet shepherd mix finally go home!

Summer Volunteer Opportunities for Kids

Pinal County Animal Care & Control has two events to get the kids out of the house this summer!

Water Day is an all-day event with different activities on June 10th!

  • Families can show up from 7 am-10 am, spend time with the dogs, get pictures, and submit their photos for the photo contest. The shelter will have pools, bubbles, and props ready for contestants.
  • The shelter will have sudsy doggie playgroups going for most of the afternoon. Watch the dogs splash around together...and possibly find your next best friend!
  • From 1 pm-3 pm, PCACC will present a summer safety presentation for kids and dogs. After the presentation, families will get to make treats for the dogs. Sign-up is required for the presentation and treat-making.
  • The first ten adoptions of the day are being sponsored by a previous adopter, who will celebrate her 80th birthday at the shelter and collect donations!

Reading to the Dogs will occur on Tuesday, July 4th, and again on July 8th. Children will learn the importance of shelter enrichment, practice "gate games," and read to the dogs. Sign-up is required to participate, and spots are limited!

Anthem K-8 Students Raise Money for Shelter

The 6th-grade class at Anthem K-8 recently raised money and collected donations for Pinal County Animal Care & Control. The generous students sold bracelets and raised $932.17 for the shelter. They collected an assortment of treats, food, blankets, and more for the shelter animals.

Animal Protection Officer Florez visited the school and got to speak during an assembly about the student's positive impact and how the donations will be helping the local shelter pets.

Pet Safety Tip

Be On the Look Out for Toads

With monsoon season just around the corner, Sonoran Desert Toads are awakening from their hibernation, and their presence can be dangerous for your pets.

The Sonoran Desert Toad, also known as the Colorado River Toad, is a native species to Arizona. They are described as olive to brown in color with spots on their backs and white “warts” in the corners of their mouths. These toads seep toxins from their pores, and when a dog or cat licks a toad, it can cause the pet to foam at the mouth, drool profusely, walk unsteadily, experience fevers and seizures, and can be fatal.

If your pet comes in contact with a toad and is conscious, you can use a garden hose to flush your pet’s mouth. Try to flush the water from back to front to avoid your pet swallowing water that may be contaminated. Call or seek veterinary care immediately!

Pinal Pet of the Month

Meet Blippi

Blippi is a year-and-a-half-old mixed-breed dog. He was found as a stray in August of 2022, and sadly, no owners ever stepped up for this handsome blue-coated boy.

Blippi is a motivated, active young dog that would greatly benefit from a foster home or forever home. Blippi has done well with other dogs and is waiting for you and your family to come and meet him at Pinal County Animal Care & Control!
