TISOH Newsletter Spring 2022 Issue
Message from Tim Lam

Greetings TISOH family,

Welcome to the Spring 2022 edition of the Pineapple Newsletter.

As we begin the new year, it is a great time to think about where TISOH has been and where we are heading as an institution. Over the past year, we have been refining our programs both in the classroom and virtually while keeping our students highly engaged throughout their studies. We also partnered with our industry associations in the development and creation of certifications for hospitality professionals. I am excited to announce the Certified Wedding Industry Professional (CWIP) Certification which is a joint education effort of TISOH and the Wedding Industry Professional Association (WIPA). More on CWIP will be provided to our readers in the coming months ahead.

A major goal for 2022 is to provide students the confidence to enter the job market with TISOH's customized career training. Later this year, expect to see more career-focused webinars, workshops, and student events which will give them the tools to become job-ready candidates for prospective employers.

In addition, this newsletter will look back into our past semester highlights including our TISOH speaker series along with student site visits and events. Be sure to check into our alumni hub, TISOHnext, for the latest news and happenings.

In the meantime, wear your mask, stay safe, and stay healthy. I look forward to connecting with you soon.

Sincerely,
TISOH Executive Director

Career Goals for the New Year!

Making 2022 your best professional year can have a lot to do with keeping up with your career resolutions. Looking back at the past year, did you follow through with your career goals? Many professionals began the year with high hopes, but their ambition typically fades away due to stress, prior commitments, unforeseen obligations involving work and life. Below are a few career tips to keep you motivated and productive so that your careers goals remain intact throughout this year.

Identifying your career goals
Be specific and honest with your career goals. If you want a new job, you must plan to find and get one and not just apply and hope to get hired the next day. Goals should be attainable; therefore, create an action plan and see if that goal can be reached or not … and make sure it’s a goal you actually want to achieve.

Preparing for success
Keep up to date with your resume by listing any new accomplishments and skills you have acquired over the past year. Also, your LinkedIn profile should be active, showing that you are still engaging with your existing connections. Even if you are not actively job searching, you should be prepared if an exciting opportunity comes knocking at your door.

Growing your network
Commit yourself to attend more events and making your professional presence known amongst your work community. Your career potential is determined by whom you know and who knows you. Additionally, meeting new people creates new opportunities for you professionally. A little push and support from your professional networks will help you succeed.

Reflecting on your progress
Midway through the year, evaluate your career goals and check to see if you made progress and improvements so far. If there was no progression, then it is best not to pursue the goal any further. Remember to strive for progress and not perfection. If you see improvements made in your professional life, continue on that journey.

Learning something new
Acquire a new certification whether or not your job requires it of you. Alternatively, you may get involved in courses or education for your own personal fulfillment. If it is something the demonstrates value to your work, check with your employer to assist with covering the costs associated. One of the crucial reasons for learning something new allows you the power to achieve many things you were not able to do before.

Having these career tips will come in handy as you embark on your new year. As long as you have a solid foundation, the easier it is for you to accomplish your career goals. All the best to you in 2022.
