Big Brothers/Big Sisters Comes to Pierz!
The BBBS program is looking for mentors in our community
Did you know that children who have a Big Brother or Big Sister are more likely to graduate from high school?

Big Brothers Big Sisters offers college & career readiness programming and awarded $27,900 in exclusive scholarships this year.

Please consider being a mentor! What does it take? Mentors must be 18 year of age or older and:
  • Commit to one year of friendship with your Little, with activities twice a month (during school year) for one hour each time at the school.
  • Maintain communication over school breaks and summer months via phone, mail, email, attending BBBS staffed activities, etc.
  • Maintain monthly communication with School-Based Coordinator to discuss.
  • Be consistent, dependable and patient, and put the child’s safety and well-being first.

Mary Tschida Passes the Community Ed torch to Sarah Funk
Mary Tschida has been the director of Pierz Community Education since its inception over 30 years ago--and we are SO grateful for her many years of service, enriching so many lives!

With 'goodbyes' also come 'hellos' as the district welcomes Sarah Funk as our new director of Community Education. Sarah has over 23 years of experience in Early Childhood, ECFE, preschool, after school school age child care and another 6 years working in Community Education in Royalton and Sartell. Sarah grew up in Pierz and is excited to work in her community and be able to serve her neighbors and members of the Pierz area. “I have looked forward to having this opportunity for several years and have a history of serving on local committees to provide events and activities for the community. Mary has built a program I am excited to take over and grow. I don’t need to make many changes because she has left me with a strong program but I will tweak a few things and add new options. I will add the ability to register online for classes and will use Notify Me to post time or location details for classes if you lose your registration info. I will be working full time during the school year and as needed during the summer so emails will be the fastest way to reach me because I will check those daily even when I am not in the office.”

Added to the Community Education Director’s responsibility is over seeing the School Readiness Preschool program. The Pierz District is committed to preparing our youngest learners with skills needed to be successful in Kindergarten. With the background and experience Sarah has in early childhood, it is a perfect fit. “I still believe that parents are the first and most important teacher in a child’s life but expectations in kindergarten are high. If we can provide a quality program a couple of days a week to help prepare a child, it will give them a foundation for success. My goal will be to answer those questions for parents so they feel confident in knowing what they can do to help prepare their child.”
