We Love our Bus Drivers!
February 21-25 was School Bus Driver Appreciation week. Due to a snow day and a late start last week, our bus drivers and bus paras were even more critical than ever in getting our students to school safely. Bus drivers are the first staff person our students see in the morning, and the last one before children go home at night.

More good 'bus news': in the latest COVID update, mandated masking on public transportation was lifted by the CDC on March 1st. Check out these smiling faces!

We asked our drivers what they like about driving school bus...watch the video to see what they had to say!

Music in Our Schools month
March is 'Music in Our Schools' month. This month-long celebration of music education is facilitated by the National Association for Music Education and has been celebrated in some capacity since 1972. The goal of this month is to demonstrate the significance of music education. This week we are highlighting our Healy High Choir program's latest accomplishments.

We are so thankful and ever-impressed by our entire music staff. Thank you Mr. Pohland, Ms. Kolodji, Ms. Mitchell, Ms. Mennis, and Mr. Mathwig!
Pierz choir students participated in the BIG SING honor choir on February 25 at Saint Cloud State University. Four additional high schools plus the University's choral ensembles formed a choir of over 120 singers. The singers were privileged to work alongside composer Kyle Pederson to rehearse three of his compositions for the concert. Learning directly from the composer was a really special experience. The event was a huge success and Pierz students represented their singing community with pride!
On Wednesday March 2, eight choir students traveled to St. Michael Albertville High School to participate in a choir event of a lifetime. Along with high school choirs from all over the state of Minnesota and the world renowned Aeolian Singers from Oakwood University, the students performed two songs as a mass festival choir.

The day started with a group rehearsal led by G. Philip Schulz III of Vocalessence, a distinguished choir based in the Twin Cities. After the mass rehearsal, students observed high schools from all over the state perform and received feedback from a panel of choral conductors including Jason Max Ferdinand and G.Philip Schulz III. This was followed by a dinner and final rehearsal together before a culminating concert. The students had the incredible opportunity to hear the Aeolian choir perform as well as the STMA choirs. The concert closed with the two mass choir songs with hundreds of voices joining together. It was a spectacular event to be a part of and the Pierz singers represented the school with pride!
Pierz Choirs are proud to announce Faith Bridewell (above left) and Miranda Otremba's (above right) acceptance into the 7-8th Grade MN ACDA Honor Choir! The two will perform with students from all across the state on May 7th in Mahtomedi, MN. These two eighth graders were chosen from hundreds of audition tapes and worked hard to prepare their auditions material. Congratulations to Faith and Miranda!

Celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday all week
Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! What fun the classes have had celebrating and learning more about this author's light-hearted, whimsical style of writing. Preschool and kindergarten classes celebrated all week by dressing up, working on special math problems, and doing fun reading activities. It may be just an excuse for our teacher's to dress up, too!
100th day of school with Zero the Hero
The annual celebration of the 100th day of school milestone was celebrated in Kindergarten last week as students continue to master their counting skills to 100 in various forms.

Making an appearance was Zero the Hero himself. This superhero is very special because he allows us to count past the number nine!
Drug-free contest winners
Congratulations to fourth graders Arianna Smude, Finley Willis, and Lacey Giuliani, winners of the 'Being Drug-Free' poster contest. The contest was sponsored by the Brainerd Elks Lodge which also donated cash prizes to the winners. Pictured is Herman Wisneski, representing the Elks Lodge, who also brought a Red's pizza party for all fourth graders to celebrate their commitment to a drug-free future!
