If this fact concerns you, you are not alone. This past school year, a group of Pierz teachers and staff have been discussing and researching the negative impact the use of cellphones and other electronic devices are having on student’s ability to concentrate in the classroom as well as interact with one another socially. They wanted to find resources to help teachers, parents and students with this issue.
"Screenagers: Growing Up In The Digital Age" is an award winning film that showcases how families are struggling to combat the overuse of social media and video games and how it is affecting academics and our social/emotional health. The film offers solutions on how we can help our kids navigate the digital world. It does a great job of both presenting the brain research surrounding this topic and giving real life examples of what parents/teachers have tried and found to be successful strategies that can balance the use of technology to most benefit not only kids but adults as well.
The Pierz School District will be hosting 2 showings of this documentary prior to the 2018-19 school year. They are hoping to jumpstart the conversation surrounding this issue, provide tools and resources for parents and other caregivers, and work together to create a more fully engaged and healthy learning environment at school and at home.
