New School Board Members Sworn In

Back Row: Superintendent George S. Weber, Chair- Matthew J. Hoheisel, Clerk- Wes Young, David Stumpf. Front Row: Kayla Jensen, Treasurer- Marvin Thomas, Vice-Chair- Ashley Toops

At the school board meeting on January 29th, the newest members of the Pierz School Board, Kayla Jensen and David Stumpf, were sworn in. The Minnesota School Boards Association adheres to standards for all public school boards, and outlines the following that each member agrees to as their Oath of Office:

"It is an honor that you were elected to guide the education of our community’s children. As you recite the oath of office, you assume a tremendous responsibility as a director of our school district with the duties empowered by the Minnesota Legislature. This power puts you and the other members of our school board in the position of being both morally and legally responsible for equitable, quality education of every student in the district.

In carrying out this responsibility, you will be asked to fulfill the roles of vision, structure, accountability, and advocacy. In providing vision, the board, with extensive participation of the community, envisions the community’s educational future and then formulates the goals, defines the outcomes, and sets the course for the public schools.

To achieve the vision, the board establishes a structure and creates an environment designed to ensure all students the opportunity to attain their maximum potential through a sound organizational framework. Because as a board we must be accountable to the community, we must ensure a continuous assessment of student achievement and all conditions affecting the education of our children.

As board members, we serve as education’s key advocate on behalf of students and our community schools to advance the vision for our schools. Furthermore, we must strive to work together with the superintendent and staff to lead the district toward fulfilling the vision we have created, fostering excellence for every student in the areas of academic skills and knowledge, citizenship and personal development."

Thank you to our dedicated school board members who work to ensure the best education for all of our students!

Happenings at Healy

Pierz Symphonic Band Performs At State Music Conference

It was a big day for our little town as the Pierz Schools Symphonic Band was chosen out of 100s of school bands in the state to perform and be showcased at the Minnesota Music Educators Association's Mid-Winter Conference on February 13th at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Band students spent the day before their performance showcasing their music for fellow students on our own PAC stage, then walking the halls to the cheers of their peers, and finally spending the night and day in Minneapolis, prepped and ready to showcase their talents to music educators across the state. The band performed nine songs in the program theme of Inspire. Connect. Play. Congratulations to the entire music department staff, students, and families. What an honor!

Winter Carnival for our Unified Team

Last week the Special Olympic Athletes and Unified Partners went to Camp Confidence in Pillager for the Winter Carnival. "We had s’mores, ice fished, rode side by sides and snowmobiles… even went snow tubing. It was pretty cold but we had plenty of spots to warm up. The volunteers had raving reviews on how full of excitement and spirit our students had and would ask where we are from [we were proud to say, 'Pierz!']. We are grateful to be able to participate in these activities and have these amazing opportunities for the these kids. Even though it was cold, we had lots of smiles and laughter!" —Mr. Jeremy Monson, Special Olympics Coach

Happenings at Pioneer Elementary

Spelling Bee Buzzed By Quickly

The annual Spelling Bee wrapped up last week as students in grades 5-8 competed for top speller. Students in grades 4-6 as well as family members of the contestants looked on and quietly rooted for their favorites. The Spelling Bee went only 8 rounds this year; typically it lasts between 12-15 rounds, and the final, winning word was "ogre".

In the end, Tripp Toops took top honors with Eirinn Ballou earning second place honors. They will compete at regionals at Sourcewell on March 19. Congratulations to the winners and to all the contestants who earned their spot in the competition!

Readers Theater Brings Books to Life

Led by our former media specialist Ms. JoAnn Dahl (now 'retired' and traveling the world), the Readers Theater troupe entertained our students as they brought stories to life last week as part of our "I Love to Read Month" activities. If you look close, you'll see some other familiar former Pioneer faces 'on stage' (we are looking at you, Mr. Loren Meyer and Ms. Georgia Kretschmar)!

Community Education

Join us each Sunday for open pickleball! We rotate courts and players. If you are new, we can set up a court just for beginners to give you a chance to get a feel for play and learn the rules.

Purchase a punch card online for 10 sessions or pay $3 when you arrive.

Use the form to let us know you're coming! Email Sarah if you are new and want a beginner's court.

Community Education uses the same class registration as the Activities Department. Please call if you have any trouble creating your account. Although both activities and community ed use rSchools, you won't be able to check out a varsity sport and a youth camp simultaneously. User experience will be the same making it easier to navigate but they are two different stores requiring separate log-ins. You can create the accounts with the same username and password to keep things simple! A link to both stores will be on the Activities page and the Community Ed page. Lunch payments will still be made with Edutrak.

Use the new online program to register today.
