Award Announcement
The Alliance for Pioneer Square is pleased to announce the award of funding to 23 projects totaling $120,000 through the Pioneer Square Small Business Support program.

The Pioneer Square Small Business Support program, made possible by $100,000 in funding from  Historic South Downtown and an additional $20,000 from the  Sounders SC Rave Foundation , will support businesses in creating, sustaining, or enhancing an active online presence. A total of 86 applications were received by the Alliance in this award cycle.

The Alliance for Pioneer Square is pleased to support the resilience of Pioneer Square businesses and nonprofits. This opportunity will allow 23 businesses to continue operations and also set them up for success during the current reopening period. Businesses will be more prepared to adapt to future situations that require a more robust online presence.

"The Pioneer Square Small Business Support Program is an important part of the Alliance’s initiative to address critical needs to help stabilize our neighborhood’s small businesses so that they are able to remain in operation, maintain employment levels, and sustain workplace opportunities during the current COVID-19 pandemic", said Lisa Howard, Executive Director at the Alliance for Pioneer Square.

A Community Review Panel, with assistance from the Alliance staff, reviewed each of the 86 applications received and voted on a final 23 projects to receive funding. 100% of funds from the Small Business Support Program has been awarded to the following businesses in Pioneer Square:

  • J. Rinehart Gallery is a fine art gallery with a focus on contemporary artists with connections to the Pacific Northwest. Owner & Director, Judith Rinehart opened the gallery in 2019. This award will allow the gallery to purchase video recording equipment to produce higher quality content and work with a digital marketing strategist to update the gallery's website.

  • Arcana Metalwork is a handcrafted jewelry studio and jewelry exhibition gallery located within the ’57 Biscayne Artist Studios in Pioneer Square and is owned by Peggy Foy.This funding allows the gallery to pivot to online sales and launch an e-commerce site.

  • Tat's East Coast Delicatessen was started by Brian Tatman & Jason Simodejka in the spring of 2004. The deli offers a diverse menu of high-quality take-out and delivery meals with a little taste of what the East Coast has to offer. The award will be utilized for the development of a new website, online ordering app and to support the reintroduction of a food truck business model in residential locations.

  • Cafe Nordo is a pop-up restaurant and underground theater opened in 2009. Nordo serves up modern cuisine while thrilling audiences with the history, myth, science, and politics of food. The funding will help Nordo continue its online cooking video programming and expand online content.

  • Cone & Steiner General is a modern-day general store and neighborhood market opened in Pioneer Square in August 2014. The award will go towards improving the online ordering site and delivery system to make it more accessible, user-friendly, and visible.

  • Two Doors Down Beer and Burgers will open its Pioneer Square location in the Summer of 2020. Owned by Erin Nestor and Rebecca Denk, the restaurant has been named top burger spot in Seattle by Eater in both 2019 and 2020. Funding will help the restaurant create an online store which integrates with a point-of-sale system that allows the customer to order and pay in advance for pick up.

  • Swift Industries is a bicycle accessories company started in 2008 by Martina Brimmer and Jason Goods. Funding will be used to implement a retail scheduling tool on the store's website and go towards marketing the Swift Campout online event.

  • Kinesia Pilates, owned by Christl Marcontell, is a fitness studio opened in 2004 that teaches the Pilates method for better physical and mental health.The award will go towards professional re-design of the studio's website, marketing strategy, and video/content editing.

  • Flora and Henri began as a children’s retailer in 1998 and in June of 2017 opened its doors in Seattle at the corner of 1st and Jackson in the historic Schwabacher Hardware building of Pioneer Square. Funding will be used to create and execute strategic measures in SEO optimization, advertising on social and search engines, and digital retargeting for the website.

  • Juan Alonso Studio is a contemporary art studio by Cuban-American visual artist, Juan Alonso-Rodríguez. The studio showcases his art work and the work of POC, women, LGBTQ, and immigrant artists. The award will help the gallery create an online store.

  • H. Bailey Boutique is a resale menswear boutique opened in 2017 by Hilary Bailey Burnett in the historic Good Arts Building. The store offers gently worn contemporary pieces, including shoes, bags, sport coats and ties. Funding received will help create an online sales presence through the store's website.

  • The London Plane is a partnership between Katherine Anderson, owner of Marigold & Mint, and the team behind  Sitka & SpruceThe Corson BuildingOld Chaser Farm, and Bar Ferdinand. The space is part cafe, part specialty foods grocery, and part floral workshop. This award will allow The London Plane to continue building their online store and to create an order/pickup/delivery system.

  • M&M Jewelry Studio in Pioneer Square showcases custom jewelry, designed and handcrafted by local jewelers Mari and Misbah. With this funding, the studio wants to build out a professional website to sell products online and invest in online marketing of its services.

  • Luigis Italian Eatery is part of Seattle's Little Italy, a collection of restaurants in Pioneer Square that provide a unique Italian dining experience. The restaurant, owned by Angela Williams and her late husband Luigi DeNunzio opened in 2016. The award will go towards investing in online cooking classes and boosting the current website.

  • Commissary Korean Kitchen is a Korean street food restaurant in Pioneer Square. The award will be used to revamp and update the restaurant's website to accommodate online orders and delivery.

  • Back Alley Bike Repair, opened in 2012, is a bike sales and service shop in Pioneer Square that focuses on same-day tune-ups for commuters and selling commuter gear and new and used bikes. The company plans to use the funding received to update its on-line portal, generate seasonal marketing strategy and expand its on-line suite of products.

  • Planet Java Inc, opened in 1993 by Patti and Curtis Blue, is a family owned 1950s-style sit down diner with a 50's theme and comfort food made with lots of love. Funding will help Planet Java update it's website and explore more online platforms to market the business.

  • Lady Yum serves delectable macarons, champagne, local wines and artisanal products from the area’s most adventurous and passionate makers. With the funding, Lady Yum plans to invest in a e-commerce solution and online advertising.

  • Bodytonic Pilates is an inclusive and body-positive Pilates studio which focuses on fitness and rehabilitation and is owned by Nadia Rodriguez. Funding will go towards rebranding this 15 year old business and rebuilding its website.

  • Koplin Del Rio art gallery plans to use its funding to enhance its virtual collateral targeted at online audiences.

  • Intrigue Chocolate Co. is a small manufacturer of fresh, handcrafted truffles that was established in 2005. The award will go towards technical IT assistance and implementing paid social media marketing.

  • Salumi Salumi is a renowned deli, cured meat producer and sandwich shop that has produced high quality gourmet cured meats and traditional Italian foods in the neighborhood since 1999. With this funding, Salumi will update its website to offer family meals, takeout and delivery options and do social media cooking classes and events.
  • Hole In The Wall BBQ is an authentic family establishment that has been serving lunch since 1889. The restaurant plans to use its funding for online, social media or delivery service marketing.
