Madam C.J. Walker: The First Self-Made Black Woman Millionaire
Born Sarah Breedlove on December 23, 1867, Madam C.J. Walker transformed the haircare industry and became the first self-made Black woman millionaire in America. After experiencing hair loss and scalp issues, she developed a line of haircare products specifically designed for Black women.
Walker created the “Madam C.J. Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower”, a scalp treatment that gained immense popularity. She traveled across the country, training sales agents and empowering Black women through entrepreneurship. By 1910, she had established a thriving business with a factory, beauty school, and training programs for women.
Walker didn’t just build a business; she used her wealth to uplift Black communities. She donated to educational causes, civil rights organizations, and supported the NAACP’s anti-lynching movement. Her legacy lives on through her contributions to Black beauty culture and economic empowerment.

Born on October 30, 1922, in Jamaica, Queens, New York, Marie Van Brittan Brown was a nurse who recognized the need for improved home security. Living in a neighborhood with high crime rates and slow police response times, Brown envisioned a system that would allow residents to monitor and secure their homes more effectively.
In 1966, collaborating with her husband, Albert Brown, an electronics technician, Marie developed the first home security system. Their invention included peepholes, a camera that could slide vertically to look through each peephole, monitors, and a two-way microphone system. This setup enabled homeowners to see and communicate with visitors at their door from a safe distance. They filed a patent for their device in 1966, which was granted in 1969.

Born on March 4, 1877, in Paris, Kentucky, Garrett Augustus Morgan was a trailblazing inventor and entrepreneur.
In 1912, Morgan patented the "Safety Hood and Smoke Protector," designed to protect users from smoke and harmful gases. The device gained national attention during a tragic tunnel explosion under Lake Erie in 1916. Morgan and his brother donned the safety hoods to rescue trapped workers, saving several lives. This invention laid the groundwork for modern gas masks used in various industries and military applications.
Witnessing the dangers of road travel, Morgan sought to improve traffic safety. In 1923, he patented a traffic signal that featured a third "warning" position, in addition to the standard "stop" and "go" signals. This innovation provided drivers with a transitional warning, reducing accidents and enhancing road safety.
