Pipkin's Latinx Connections club hosts guest speaker for Hispanic Heritage Month
John Alarid shared his culture, personal story and hope for Pipkin Middle School students.

“When I moved to Springfield 12 years ago, I realized there was some cultural understanding and awareness of African American history here, but very little for Latinx and Hispanic people,” said Alarid. “I wanted to tell my story to Pipkin students to continue to bring an awareness of both my culture and the history of a community that’s growing in Springfield.”

My SPS Story: Hillcrest High School employees who work with an immediate family member at Hillcrest
"It is extremely important to me as a principal to build a team. I consider it one of the most important jobs I do as a principal. I’m always looking for a great team member. It’s a bonus when the best candidate is also an alumni of Hillcrest because they know our community, because they are our community.

We have 12 team members who work alongside an immediate family member here on The Hill. For example, Ryan and Brant Schaffitzel, father and son, both teach freshmen and both are Hillcrest graduates.

In total, there are 17 alumni of Hillcrest High School who work and serve students. Each one with a desire to serve and give back to the community that has poured into them.

Next year, 10 more students will join their parents on The Hill, and I’ll keep hiring incredible educators and support staff who are also former Hornets. You can’t hide that Hornet pride."
