This morning we went to press we awoke to the news that David Cameron has almost negotiated an "emergency brake" deal. In other words, the British Prime Minister is working to control the number of migrants entering the country and the amount of benefits the state should have to pay them. Early indications suggest that Cameron will be able to pull the "emergency brake" for up to four years if the UK can prove Britain's social and welfare system is under "excessive strain" from immigration.

Passenger car tyres
In February 2015, Tyres & Accessories reported on the competitiveness of the UK car tyre market, fuelled by the highest level of imports in Europe, particularly from East Asian players. Where this once would signify a purely budget approach, the encroachment of players on the premium and mid-range ground, led by Hankook, continues to reshape the traditional segmentation of the market; the notable establishment fightback of Bridgestone's Firestone strategy was also an interesting development.

The pressure on the lowest end of the market remained palpable, leading some to suggest that greater protectionist policies within Europe may be around the corner, yet T&A suggested an upside to the widespread availability of very low-cost tyres could become a carrot with which to lure consumers away from poorly regulated part-worn dealers and into new tyre depots. From a product point of view, Michelin produced what could be termed a quietly revolutionary product in its CrossClimate given its subsequent performance. Our annual survey of the UK passenger car tyre market, including the latest product news, will be published in the February issue .
Motorcycle tyres
Motorcycle sales in the UK are on the rise. The Motorcycle Industry Association reported sales of 114,000 motorcycles in 2015, the highest annual total since before the recession. This upswing is being driven by sales of commuter motorcycles and scooters, with almost 44,000 commuter two-wheelers between 101-125cc sold during the year. The current trend is of course good news for those interested in the tyre side of the business, a topic that Tyres & Accessories will highlight in its February 2016 issue. Be sure to pick up next month's magazine and check out this two-wheel feature.
