NEWS FROM THE COMMUNITY GARDENS
May 10, 2019

Dear Gardeners,
Thanks to everyone who attended the mandatory meeting on Tuesday, May 7. It was wonderful to finally meet all of you. For gardeners who were unable to attend, a second meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Schedule for new garden beds
If you'd like to lend a hand, volunteers will begin laying the new beds in place and spreading gravel on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday between 10am and 4pm. There may be opportunities after 4pm, so please let me know if you're available to help. We're planning to have the beds completed by Saturday, May 18th. I'll keep you posted.

Highlights and updates from the May 7 meeting
Straw: We now have a round bale of organic straw available for community gardeners. I'll be packing straw into large leaf collection sized paper bags and leaving them in the garden shed for your use, priced at $4 per bag. Please leave the empty bags in the shed for reuse.

Seedlings for Sale : In addition to the May 18th plant sale from 8 to 9:30 am, you'll find seedlings available for sale to the left of the garden shed. At this point, you'll only find broccoli and parsley. Although we have over 30 types of vegetables currently being grown, we won't know what seedlings will be available/extra from the farm planting until the day of the planting.

Garden bed flags for new gardeners: As discussed, gardeners who are new to gardening have the option of placing a green flag (found in the garden shed) in your garden bed if you're open to experienced gardeners checking in to lend a hand or a bit of advice. This is what makes community gardening so amazing!

Programs: Look for the garden and farm program and event schedule in next week's Community Gardens Bulletin.

Please send your questions or comments my way. I look forward to seeing you in the garden .

Best, Joyce
Community Gardens Director
It's wonderful to see the garden sprouting with children, seedlings and activities. Special thanks to Maceo and Oscar London (below), who shared a joint birthday party and asked their friends to bring donations for the children growing at the Community Gardens! We'll find these colorful watering cans, tools and gloves put to good use in the gardens for many years to come!
