Pittsfield Township

Senior Center Newsletter

February 2024

Thank you for your patience while we navigate DaySmart. If you are having problems registering for programs or creating a new account, please come to the office for assistance. We're happy to help!

Our Winter 2024 brochure is now available online. You can find it at pittsfield-mi.gov, click the green Parks & Recreation box then select Brochure from the left side of the page. You can register for classes by clicking on the class, sending you to DaySmart registration.

DaySmart can sync with your personalized calendar of registered activities so if we have a cancellation or closure you can see it on your calendar.

All classes do require registration and any FREE programs will require current membership to the Pittsfield Senior Center.

Membership is ANNUAL (Jan-Dec) and costs $5 for Pittsfield Residents and $10 for Non-Residents.

As classes are starting to have waitlists, we ask that you commit to coming to at least half of the sessions for each class. We appreciate the enthusiasm for our programs and would like to see everyone utilizing the space we have.

Please note: Credit card purchases, both in-person and online, now have a convenience fee. We also accept cash and checks without additional fees.

Starting January 23rd, you'll see a new face in the building. Christina, our intern, is studying Social Work. She'll be with us for the next couple of months and will be available to assist with registrations and help around the office.

Review of our closure and cancellation policies:

Pittsfield Township generally follows Washtenaw Co. closures for weather events. We don't follow a particular school district as we have residents in multiple school districts. When we are notified from the Supervisor's office, we will send an email to the rosters for the affected classes as soon as possible. We also follow this process when an instructor needs to cancel a class.

In addition, we will update our calendar to reflect the closure/cancellation. Our calendar can be found at recreation.pittsfield-mi.gov then click CALENDAR.

Registration for the Spring/Summer session will be opening in February. You can register online or in person.

As a reminder, we will be closed Feb 19. In addition, we will not have classes after 2pm on Feb 26 and all-day Feb 27 because we are a Polling location.

Medicare enrollment periods that allow for some changes in coverage continue from January 1 through March 31.

There are two overlapping enrollment periods. The first is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. If you have an Advantage Plan and wish to change to another Advantage Plan or to switch back to Original Medicare (plus D probably plus Medigap), you can do it in this period. The second is the General Enrollment Period. If you failed to enroll in Part A or B during other enrollment periods, you can do so (often with a penalty). For many others, Medicare initial enrollment and special enrollment periods are ongoing.

The Michigan Medicare Assistance Program offers assistance as a free public service throughout the year. If you would like assistance, Stacie Jackson, Recreation Specialist, 734-822-2117, will put you in touch with a certified MMAP counselor.

The Love, Lure, and Lore of The Laundry Line

Tuesday, Jan 30, 10:00am-12:00pm

The laundry line? What's there to talk about? Anne will take you on a nostalgic trip back in time to the days when everyone hung their wash on the line to dry – when they went online without the internet! There will be memories to share, links between the clothesline and social/cultural issues, history, feminism, psychology, sociology, and ecology. You will hear why "solar drying" – that wonderful free sun – is once again the way to go in today's eco-conscious world. There will be personal stories, delightful slides to see, along with a peek at Anne's vast collection of laundry memorabilia. We may end up with a laundry list of things to think about, but she won't leave us hanging while airing her thoughts. She will pin things down for us, and try to remove any hang-ups we may have about using the clothesline. So, come join us and let's hang out together!

This is open to those who wish to draw and/or paint with watercolor, and even play with mixed media. We'll begin with simple items, and as always I'll do demos and share my 'tricks' on making it easier. Mandalas are a fun way to repeat images of what we love. We will also look at examples of art that inspire happiness and ideas from the book "HAPPINESS 25 ways to live joyfully through art."

Basic drawing supplies are fine. Basic watercolor set is fine for those who prefer painting.

You may be surprised at how improvements in your core can reduce aches and pains in your head/neck, arms and legs. Feldenkrais classes emphasize improved body awareness within the context of functional movement patterns to create lasting change. You can feel better in your body!

The instructor has been a Feldenkrais practitioner for 15 years and has taught to a wide variety of students.
