‘Tis The Season – Celebrating Plainedge during the Holidays
A Message from Superintendent Dr. Edward A. Salina, Jr.
I would first like to start by wishing everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! As we approach the end of the year and continue through the remainder of this exciting holiday season, I am reminded of our incredible community. The year 2021 has been rich in experience for myself, students, teachers, parents and community members alike, and I love this time of year because it allows us slow down and reflect on these experiences with sincerity.

Through November and December we made countless memories that I already cherish. As you will see below, we recently held our 5th Annual Lighting of the Tree and the Menorah. This is an important tradition that allows us to celebrate the many families that make up Plainedge by coming together to watch the beautiful lighting ceremony.

We were extremely honored to invite a number of our local law enforcement officers to our schools to honor them for Plainedge’s ‘Law Enforcement Appreciation Day’. This uniquely memorable event not only offered authentic education to our kids about the greatness in law enforcement, but it also allowed our district to say thank you for the great work that law enforcement does every day to keep us safe. My personal favorite moments were seeing the NCPD helicopter land on the field at Eastplain Elementary School while our students cheered, and seeing those same children explore police vehicles and equipment with such excitement in their eyes.

We were also extremely proud to see that two of our teachers were recognized by News 12 for the exceptional work that they do. My pride in our schools developed even more when we watched our High School Varsity Football and Cheerleading teams BOTH have wins in Long Island Championships. Congratulations to everyone involved on these major achievements!

Finally, our district is expanding. We recently unveiled a beautiful custom-made sign for our Early Childhood Learning Center (at Eastplain Elementary School). We utilized 3-D crayons in the design to build excitement around our newly instated universal pre-kindergarten program since this program is something that we were so pleased to be able to offer to our community. All three of our elementary schools are in full swing promoting the “Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Program” with their state of the art salad bars. Check out the salad bars in the video below and to also get a sneak peek at the new high school cafeteria.

Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the remainder of this holiday season with love in your hearts and remember that #WeArePlainedge!
5th Annual Tree + Menorah Lighting
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 5th annual Lighting of the Tree and Menorah “Season of Lights” Ceremony at Brian Moore Athletic Center earlier this month.

We especially want to thank:

  • Plainedge Best Buddies Club, & our High School and Middle School Choir Clubs for rocking around the tree with us. We loved hearing your carols and singing along!

  • The Brian Moore Foundation and the Plainedge Federation of Teachers for sponsoring the cheerfully festive event and donating 100 custom NYPD basketballs and holiday-themed toys to the children.

  • The Bethpage and North Massapequa Fire Departments who invited Santa all the way from the North Pole

  • Local food truck, the Kannoli King for the delicious hot chocolate and pastries.
Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (LEAD)
It’s no coincidence that “Law Enforcement Appreciation Day” spells out “LEAD.”

On behalf of the Board of Education and Plainedge Public Schools, we offer so much gratitude to each and every single officer who spent their afternoon with us at our three elementary schools. We learned how to LEAD with integrity, gained perspective about our community, offered tokens of our appreciation, created real change… and had SO MUCH FUN getting to know you!

Some of our favorite moments that we shared were:

  • hearing your stories
  • listening to your bagpipers
  • watching your helicopter land and takeoff
  • meeting your dogs and horses
  • pretend-driving your vehicles
  • learning about your life-saving tools and equipment
  • learning about your job
  • hearing your bike safety presentations

Plainedge Varsity Football Wins Long Island Championships
The Red Devils completed a 12-0 season with wins in both the Long Island Class III High School Football Championship and Long Island Conference III Championship. Congratulations to our Varsity Football team. We are rooting for our student-athletes every step of the way so we are incredibly proud of their achievements and their hard work does not go unnoticed. CONGRATULATIONS!
Plainedge Varsity Cheerleading Wins Long Island Championship
GO BIG RED! Congratulations to our Varsity Cheerleading team, which had an incredible season which ended in a big win for them. The East and West Invitationals took place earlier this school year, the East Invitational was the one Plainedge participated in at Arlington High School. Our team took home the win in Class C. The East Invitational Class C Game Day Championship events are sponsored by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA).

WAY TO GO! We see you working relentlessly on your sport which, in the process, supports your community because you keep us cheering “WE! ARE! PLAINEDGE!” loud and proud along with you! Congratulations to our athletes and coaches for this spectacular win.
Plainedge is Proudly Represented at NYSSMA
Major congratulations are in order to Plainedge High School 11th grader, Shane Mosia, who participated in the Symphony Orchestra on string bass at the All-State music festival in Rochester, NY. We are so proud of your dedication to your art and your disciplined attitude as a music-student, which brought you to the position of representing Plainedge Public Schools in such a positive way for the rest of the world to see!
Honoring Plainedge Teachers
Thank you News12 for highlighting not one, but TWO Plainedge Public Schools teachers in your recent “2021 Long Island Honor Roll” list. We already know how lucky we are to have Ms. Montaperto and Mrs. Avgeris, so thank you for helping us to show everyone else what great talents we have on our team here at Plainedge.

Check out what News 12 Long Island had to say:

“Ms. Montaperto is pure kindness. She teaches with care, love and positivity. She makes learning fun and makes each child feel special!”

“Mrs. Avgeris is an amazing teacher in every way! She goes above and beyond to help each child find their strengths to grow and learn!”
The New Plainedge Early Childhood Learning Center Sign at Eastplain
We wanted something extra special for our brand-new Universal Pre-K Program’s launch and this custom sign is certainly that. We partnered with GDS Signs, a local LI-based sign solutions company who helped us bring our crayon-colored dreams to life at Eastplain Elementary School. The Early Childhood Learning Center sign was unveiled recently and we definitely feel that excitement each time we pass through N. Michigan Avenue and see the beautiful crayon posts! The one-of-a-kind, custom sign was fabricated using expanded polystyrene, routed to create the dimensional crayons as well as the raised lettering and graphic elements to withstand the test of time.
